TL;DR · Lead Mechatronics Engineer

Lead Mechatronics Engineer The Lead Mechatronics Engineer joins the Air Dominance & Strike team to develop aerial and multi-domain robotic systems like unmanned fighter jets and cruise missiles. This role involves high ownership over complex electro-mechanical systems, including optical systems, batteries, mechanisms, control systems, and sensors. Day-to-day responsibilities include executing rapid engineering concept evaluations, performing physics-based trade studies, managing vendor relationships, building prototypes, and leading design reviews to transition projects into production. The ideal candidate possesses expertise in PCB design using tools like Altium or KiCAD, mechanical design for stress and mounting, and hands-on prototyping skills such as soldering and harnessing. Technical requirements include experience with motor/servo drive systems, microcontrollers, power conversion, and communication protocols like CAN, I2C, and SPI. The role focuses on solving complex engineering problems within the domain of autonomous defense technology and robotics.

What you'll do

  • Design, implement, and test complex electro-mechanical systems including optical systems, batteries, and sensors.
  • Perform trade studies and physics-based analysis to solve "blue-sky" engineering problems.
  • Build hardware prototypes, analyze failures, and transition successful designs into production.
  • Manage vendor relationships and conduct market research for component selection and integration.
  • Lead design reviews and execute comprehensive hardware test plans.
  • Support critical hardware demonstrations with customers at various test sites.
  • Evaluate engineering concepts across multiple fields using first principles physics.

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years of Mechatronics or Robotics design experience.
  • Experience in PCB design using ECAD tools like Altium or KiCAD.
  • Experience in mechanical design for loads, stress, mounting, and attachment fabrication.
  • Hands-on prototyping skills including soldering, board assembly, and harnessing.
  • Experience with controls, actuation, robotics, and motor/servo drive systems.
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers, power conversion, and system integration.
  • Ability to read and manipulate schematics, wiring diagrams, and layouts.
  • BS, MS, or PhD in an engineering field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Experience in bare metal microcontroller design from schematic to bringup (preferred).
  • Outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills (preferred).
  • Familiarity with designing for rugged environments (preferred).
  • Experience in developing various electronics hardware products such as UGVs or optical systems (preferred).
  • Practical experience with electrical engineering tools like oscilloscopes and multimeters (preferred).
