TL;DR · Design Engineer, Space

Design Engineer, Space will join the Space Special Programs team to develop spacecraft, subsystems, and core technologies including optical systems, batteries, mechanisms, control systems, and sensors. This role involves executing rapid evaluations of engineering concepts, designing and testing complex electro-mechanical systems, building prototypes, and managing vendor relationships. The engineer will provide technical leadership by mentoring others in the art of small spacecraft design while maintaining high system ownership across integration and test campaigns. Key requirements include expertise in mechanical and mechanism design, 3D CAD, and experience with components designed for zero-gravity environments. Candidates must be proficient in engineering first principles and physics to solve blue-sky problems. The role addresses critical space architecture needs by developing mission-critical capabilities for operation in challenging environments, requiring a blend of hands-on assembly skills and strategic technical contribution.

What you'll do

  • Design, analyze, implement, and test complex electro-mechanical systems for spacecraft and space systems.
  • Build prototypes, analyze failures, and transition successful projects into production environments.
  • Execute rapid evaluations of engineering concepts across various fields to solve "blue-sky" problems.
  • Mentor junior engineers on the principles of small spacecraft design and testing.
  • Manage early vendor relationships and identify strategic industry partners for project needs.
  • Participate in design reviews, integration campaigns, and launch-site or on-orbit operations.
  • Support critical hardware demonstrations with customers as required.

What we're looking for

  • BS, MS, or PhD in an engineering field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
  • 2-8 years of mechanical and mechanism design experience in a professional setting.
  • Experience designing systems for spacecraft and associated space systems.
  • Experience in ground-up system design and any 3-D CAD.
  • Hands-on assembly, prototyping, testing, and performance characterization of mechanisms designed for 0g but in a 1g environment.
  • Experience designing and building very small mechanisms, components, and systems.
  • Familiarity with launch environments, range safety, and system integration efforts.
  • Experience machining and modifying mechanical components (preferred).
  • Familiarity with designing MGSE to support spacecraft testing and development (preferred).
  • Experience with Electro-Mechanical design concepts and working at the interface between electrical and mechanical components (preferred).
  • Practical experience with electrical engineering tools like oscilloscopes, power supplies, and multimeters (preferred).
  • 3+ years of experience working in a classified environment (preferred).
