NC Lathes #1, 3rd Shift is a manufacturing and production role where the operator sets up and operates multi-axis numerically controlled and computer numerically controlled lathe machine tools. The individual performs various combinations of operations including turning, facing, boring, threading, drilling, reaming, and contouring on metal forgings, castings, and bar stock. Daily responsibilities include loading machine routines into CNC computers, establishing tool offsets, assembling cutting tools in holders, and monitoring tool wear. The operator must verify workpiece conformance using precision measuring equipment like micrometers, dial gages, and surface plates while following blueprints and military specifications. Required skills include proficiency with keyboard and control panel functions, knowledge of computerized control systems, and understanding of material hardness values and feed calculations. This role supports the production of munitions, weapons, and armament systems components.
Set up and operate multi-axis CNC lathe machine tools for turning, facing, boring, threading, and drilling.
Load machine routines into CNC computers and establish work shift and tool offsets.
Interpret process sheet specifications to determine setup sequences and finished workpiece dimensions.
Secure workpieces in collets, chucks, or fixtures according to specific instructions.
Assemble cutting tools in holders and position them in the turret based on established procedures.
Monitor tool wear and metal cutting action to ensure proper material removal.
Verify workpiece conformance to specifications using precision measuring equipment like micrometers and dial gages.
Adjust tool offsets and machine feed speeds when automatic programming is faulty or malfunctions occur.
What we're looking for
High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
Associate degree or technical college (preferred).
Over four years of experience, including technical training equivalent to high school plus apprenticeship or trade school background.
Basic computer skills for entering and verifying information into forms or databases.
Knowledge of computerized control systems used on assigned CNC Lathes.
Comprehensive understanding of machine ability ratings, material hardness, tool alloys, geometries, speeds, feed calculations, and material properties.
Experience with keyboard and control panel functions to manage machining operations and CRT display modes.
