TL;DR · Lead Systems Engineering

Lead Systems Engineering serves as a subject matter expert within the Seabed Systems Business Unit, focusing on underwater acoustics sensor infrastructure and communications. This role involves managing requirements definition, decomposition, and verification for complex electronic systems using model-based systems engineering processes. The individual will develop computer models of sonar performance based on ocean sound propagation principles and create end-to-end analysis workflows. Key technical skills include proficiency in tools like BELLHOP, RAM/PE, CASS, or Acoustics Toolbox, along with MATLAB, Bash scripting, and C-language programming. Core responsibilities include conducting trade studies, performing risk mitigation planning, and participating in sea trials to validate system designs. The role addresses critical underwater acoustic communication challenges by translating raw model outputs into actionable engineering artifacts like performance budgets and detection range estimates for subsea programs.

What you'll do

  • Develop and maintain computer models of sonar system performance based on ocean sound propagation and signal detection algorithms.
  • Define requirements, flow-down, and traceability for complex electronic systems using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) processes.
  • Create technical artifacts including system specifications, interface definitions, trade studies, and detailed designs for program design reviews.
  • Conduct analysis and design tests to validate system designs while managing data recording and reporting.
  • Evaluate project risks and develop mitigation plans in coordination with program and functional leadership.
  • Translate raw modeling outputs into actionable engineering artifacts such as performance budgets and coverage assessments.
  • Plan at-sea activities, including defining test objectives, metrics, and managing data collection for sea trials.
  • Brief status updates and technical results to internal stakeholders and external customers.

What we're looking for

  • Must have a Bachelor's degree and 9 years of experience, a Graduate degree and 7 years of experience, or 13 years of experience without a degree.
  • Mastery of underwater acoustic propagation modeling using tools like BELLHOP, RAM/PE, CASS, SST, Acoustics Toolbox, KRAKEN, SCOOTER/SPARC, OASES, or equivalent.
  • Expert fluency in ocean acoustics including sound speed structure, signal propagation, and ambient noise characterization.
  • Proven experience building end-to-end analysis workflows integrating acoustic models, MATLAB processing, and Bash or C programming.
  • Experience analyzing acoustic system design elements such as sensor transduction, phased array design, and sonar/communications signal processing.
  • Demonstrated experience in systems engineering and the government program acquisition lifecycle.
  • Working knowledge of standard systems engineering processes like MIL-STD-499, EIA-632, IEEE 1220, or IEEE/ISO/IEC 15288.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOD security clearance.
