Lead Engineer, Automation Integration & Scale Engineering

What you'll do

• Own and drive the architecture, design, and implementation of backend systems for store and warehouse operations.
• Lead technical discovery and rapid prototyping to evaluate new ideas and prove their value.
• Integrate backend systems with automation software that interacts with physical devices and operational workflows.
• Guide the team through ambiguous problem spaces by making smart trade-offs to ensure high-quality delivery.
• Write high-quality code and mentor other engineers on design, performance, and scalability.
• Champion engineering best practices and maintain deep technical knowledge within areas of expertise.
• Translate real-world problems from product and operations teams into scalable engineering solutions.

What we're looking for

• A 4-year degree or equivalent experience is required.
• Candidates must have 7+ years of software development experience with at least one full cycle implementation.
• Candidates must demonstrate strong domain-specific knowledge regarding Target’s technology capabilities and key competitors' products.
• Candidates must have strong expertise in designing distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
• Candidates must have hands-on experience building resilient, high-throughput backend systems.
• Experience working with automation, hardware integration, or operational tech is a plus (preferred).
• Candidates must have excellent communication skills and a strong bias for action.
• Candidates must be able to work in a Hybrid/Flex arrangement at the Target HQ MN location.
