JOB TITLE: Executive Director, AI Engineering
The Executive Director, AI Engineering will serve as the senior technical authority for the Third-Party Administrator and Payer Solutions Technology organization. This leader will manage a high-caliber team of AI engineers to define the technical foundation, agentic framework, and AI software development lifecycle for a multi-year transformation. Key responsibilities include establishing reference architectures, reusable components, and operating models while overseeing the implementation of generative AI, natural language processing, machine learning, and computer vision. The role requires deep expertise in MLOps, LLMOps, cloud-native architecture, and data pipelines to solve complex problems in claims, enrollment, and prior authorization. The successful candidate will ensure all solutions meet HIPAA and regulatory requirements while translating technical trade-offs into measurable business value across the healthcare payer and managed care domains.
Set the AI engineering strategy and technical foundation for the TPA and Payer Solutions organizations.
Define the agentic AI framework, including design patterns, orchestration, guardrails, and human-in-the-loop controls.
Establish the AI software development lifecycle (AI SDLC) for designing, testing, deploying, and monitoring solutions.
Define the AI operating model, including team structures, roles, skills, and build-versus-buy guidance.
Lead the development of production AI solutions for claims, enrollment, and member services.
Ensure all AI solutions comply with ethical, privacy, and regulatory requirements like HIPAA.
Build and mentor a high-caliber AI engineering team while fostering a culture of innovation.
Measure and report AI effectiveness, including model quality, cost, adoption, and business impact.
What we're looking for
15+ years of experience in software engineering, data, or AI/ML, including leading AI engineering or advanced analytics teams in a large enterprise.
Hands-on experience personally designing, building, and shipping production AI solutions, including architecture, code, and model evaluation.
Production experience with generative AI and agentic systems, including orchestration, retrieval, grounding, evaluation, guardrails, observability, and cost management.
Working command of the AI stack, including ML and LLM platforms, MLOps and LLMOps, cloud-native architecture, data pipelines, and enterprise integration.
Experience establishing AI engineering practices, such as an AI SDLC, platform standards, and an operating model across multiple teams.
Proven ability to lead and influence without direct authority, ensuring AI meets ethical, privacy, security, and regulatory requirements.
Strong executive presence to explain complex technical trade-offs to VP and C-suite stakeholders and influence investment decisions.
Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, data science, information systems, or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent work experience.
