TL;DR · Energy Contract Specialist

The Energy Contract Specialist is a senior individual contributor responsible for the commercial execution of energy agreements to ensure data center power readiness and long-range capacity planning across a North American portfolio. This role involves partnering with internal teams like Legal, Finance, and Engineering while coordinating with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and market participants to manage complex contracts including utility service agreements, power purchase agreements, interconnection agreements, transmission products, and gas supply arrangements. The successful candidate will translate technical tariff structures into business guidance, maintain obligation registers, and develop repeatable contracting processes. Key requirements include expertise in energy markets, large-load interconnection, and contract analysis. The role addresses the critical challenge of securing reliable power for mission-critical infrastructure by managing the full lifecycle of energy-related commercial instruments, from initial strategy through execution and operational handoff to ensure consistent site energization.

What you'll do

  • Manage the full lifecycle of energy contracts including utility service, power purchase, interconnection, and gas supply agreements.
  • Negotiate and structure complex energy-related documents to ensure alignment with project scope and commercial strategy.
  • Identify and mitigate technical, financial, and legal risks within proposed energy agreements through cross-functional collaboration.
  • Coordinate with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and other market participants to facilitate contract development and execution.
  • Manage gas scheduling for fuel supply, including nominations, delivery windows, and pipeline capacity tracking.
  • Translate complex tariff structures and utility obligations into clear business guidance for internal leadership and project teams.
  • Maintain comprehensive contract trackers, obligation registers, and risk summaries to ensure visibility of energy commitments.
  • Develop repeatable contracting processes, templates, and governance frameworks to improve consistency across the energy portfolio.

What we're looking for

  • 7+ years of experience in energy contracting, utility procurement, project development, commercial operations, infrastructure contracting, or energy markets.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements including utility service, power purchase (PPA), interconnection, transmission, and gas supply contracts.
  • Working knowledge of electric utility processes, power markets, large-load interconnection, tariffs, regulatory requirements, and risk allocation.
  • Ability to partner with cross-functional teams including Legal, Finance, Procurement, Engineering, and Development.
  • Strong skills in contract analysis, business writing, executive communication, issue tracking, and stakeholder management.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, engineering, energy management, law, public policy, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience supporting hyperscale data centers, mission-critical infrastructure, or utility-scale energy projects (preferred).
  • Familiarity with ISO/RTO markets, FERC/NERC concepts, and advanced certifications like JD, MBA, PMP, or contract management (preferred).
