TL;DR · Cryogenic Plant Engineer

As a Cryogenic Plant Engineer, you will join the IBM Research team to support the mission of delivering useful quantum computing. You will participate in the design, installation, commissioning, and operation of helium refrigeration plants and associated equipment. Your daily responsibilities include assisting with procurement from vendors, supporting the installation of piping systems, and executing cryogenic test programs while documenting results. The role requires expertise in the behavior of materials at cryogenic temperatures, the design principles of helium refrigeration plants, and the properties of cryogenic fluids for heat transfer calculations. You must be able to interpret process flow diagrams, mechanical drawings, and ASME codes for pressure vessels and welding. Preferred skills include experience with PLC-based control systems, project management, and hardware subsystem oversight to solve technical challenges in the quantum computing domain.

What you'll do

  • Design, install, commission, and operate helium refrigeration plants for quantum computing systems.
  • Assist in the procurement of cryogenic equipment from various vendors.
  • Support the installation of specialized piping systems and related hardware components.
  • Perform testing and commissioning of helium refrigeration plants and associated equipment.
  • Manage and oversee hardware subsystems during the manufacturing process.
  • Develop, document, and execute cryogenic test programs while reporting results.
  • Interpret technical documents including P&IDs, mechanical drawings, and process flow diagrams.
  • Monitor and operate PLC-based control systems for cryogenic operations.

What we're looking for

  • Master's Degree (preferred).
  • Knowledge of material behavior at cryogenic temperatures and properties of cryogenic fluids.
  • Understanding of design, operational principles, and calculations for helium refrigeration plants and components.
  • Ability to interpret process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, mechanical drawings, and related documentation.
  • Knowledge of ASME and similar codes regarding pressure vessels, process piping, and welding.
  • Experience with PLC-based control systems, project management, and vendor interaction (preferred).
  • Experience in operating helium refrigeration plants and executing cryogenic test programs (preferred).
