As an Autonomous Vehicle Test Engineer, you will serve as the onsite technical lead for a specialized closed-course testing operation at the Desert Proving Ground. You will manage a small fleet of autonomous test vehicles, overseeing daily operations including software regression, feature validation, and calibration tests. Your role involves translating engineering objectives into actionable plans, coordinating personnel, and performing first-line troubleshooting for the AV software stack, sensors, and vehicle networks. To succeed, you must be proficient in technical reporting, data analysis, and hardware diagnostics. You will utilize tools such as Xray, INCA, and Python to ensure test readiness and data integrity. This role is critical for establishing a reliable, repeatable testing capability in a remote environment, specifically ensuring consistent validation of advanced driving-assistance systems during demanding seasonal conditions.
Serve as the onsite technical lead for all assigned autonomous vehicle closed-course testing activities.
Plan and execute software regression, feature validation, calibration, and structured data collection tests.
Manage a small fleet of test vehicles by overseeing configuration, maintenance, and daily readiness checks.
Perform first-line technical triage to troubleshoot issues involving AV software, sensors, and vehicle networks.
Coordinate track logistics, personnel assignments, and safety reviews with remote engineering teams.
Evaluate test results against defined criteria and provide clear technical feedback for program decisions.
Develop troubleshooting guides and standard operating procedures to improve site testing capabilities.
Ensure all testing activities comply with safety protocols and environmental requirements.
What we're looking for
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, automotive, systems, computer, robotics, aerospace engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline.
At least 3 years of relevant experience in autonomous vehicles, automotive engineering, robotics, aerospace, vehicle testing, systems integration, test engineering, or similar environments.
Experience planning and executing complex electro-mechanical system tests in laboratory, proving-ground, field, or comparable operational settings.
Proven ability to troubleshoot software-enabled hardware systems using diagnostic information, logs, measurements, and structured problem-solving methods.
Ability to read and apply test procedures, requirements, acceptance criteria, operating instructions, and safety controls.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, establish priorities, and maintain ownership in environments with limited onsite support.
Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting, issue escalation, and remote collaboration across functions.
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet GM requirements for closed-course vehicle testing and site access.
