The Autonomous Vehicle Test Engineer joins the Test and Validation Engineering team to ensure safe, repeatable, and scalable validation of advanced driving-assistance and autonomous-vehicle capabilities. This role involves translating engineering objectives into executable test plans and procedures for closed-course testing at the Milford Proving Ground. You will conduct software regression, feature validation, and structured data-collection testing while performing technical triage on the AV software stack, sensors, and vehicle networks. Key responsibilities include monitoring system health, troubleshooting hardware issues, and delivering actionable evidence to engineering customers. You will utilize tools such as Jira, Confluence, Xray, and Slack, alongside languages like Python and SQL. The role solves critical technical problems regarding vehicle behavior, calibration, and system integration within a complex software-defined vehicle architecture.
Translate product and software objectives into executable test plans, procedures, and resource requirements.
Plan and execute repeatable software regression, feature validation, and structured scenario testing.
Conduct closed-course vehicle testing including setup, scenario execution, and post-run closeout.
Triage issues involving the AV software stack, sensors, localization, and vehicle networks using logs and diagnostic tools.
Report pass, fail, and blocked outcomes with actionable context for engineering teams.
Prepare test vehicles and equipment by performing configuration checks and readiness inspections.
Maintain accurate records of vehicle status, test history, and open issues in tracking tools.
Identify opportunities to improve test methods, data workflows, and reporting processes.
What we're looking for
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, automotive, systems, computer, robotics, aerospace engineering, computer science, or a related technical discipline.
At least 3 years of relevant experience in autonomous vehicles, automotive engineering, robotics, aerospace, vehicle testing, systems integration, test engineering, or related technical operations.
Experience planning and executing vehicle, robotics, or complex electro-mechanical system tests in a laboratory, proving-ground, field, or comparable operational environment.
Experience troubleshooting software-enabled hardware systems using diagnostic information, logs, measurements, observations, and structured problem-solving methods.
Ability to work onsite at GM Milford Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan, and travel approximately 10% as needed.
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet applicable GM driver-training, vehicle-qualification, site-access, and safety requirements for vehicle testing.
Direct experience testing autonomous vehicles, advanced driver-assistance systems, mobile robots, or other safety-critical autonomous systems (preferred).
Experience with automotive diagnostics, CAN or Ethernet-based vehicle networks, sensors, localization, calibration, time synchronization, data recording, connectivity, or AV system-health monitoring (preferred).
