TL;DR · Automation & Controls Engineer

The Automation & Controls Engineer (Starship) joins a specialized team to develop automated solutions for Starship production. This role involves designing and activating hardware and software systems for manufacturing machines, as well as supporting transport and storage solutions for vehicles. Responsibilities include conceptualizing equipment, creating electrical and pneumatic schematics, and writing structured PLC code for manufacturing applications. The engineer will build robot systems for sub-component assembly, implement safety systems for gantries and conveyors, and design HMI screens. Key technical skills include experience with Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCat 3, National Instruments hardware, EPlan CAD, C#, .NET, Python, and SQL. The role addresses the challenge of automating a large-scale production line for heavy launch vehicles while ensuring compliance with NFPA79, NEC, and UL508A codes across various industrial sensors and robotic weld applications.

What you'll do

  • Architect, write, and debug structured PLC code for manufacturing applications.
  • Design and develop robot systems to automate the production of vehicle sub-components.
  • Create electrical, pneumatic, and fluid schematics for industrial control panels.
  • Implement compliant safety systems for robots, gantries, conveyors, and other machinery.
  • Develop aesthetically simple HMI screens to provide feedback for troubleshooting complex equipment.
  • Select and size electromechanical components such as servo motors and controllers.
  • Manage the physical construction of electrical cabinets, field wiring, and fluid plumbing.
  • Deploy automated processes and hardware systems into active production lines.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline.
  • 1+ years of experience in the design and commissioning of automation and controls systems for industrial applications.
  • Experience with PLC programming, preferably using Siemens TIA Portal and Beckhoff TwinCat 3.
  • Proficiency in HMI/SCADA programming and electrical schematic CAD software like EPlan.
  • Experience with robot systems (Kuka, ABB, Fanuc), National Instruments hardware, and field bus networks.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 79, and UL508A codes for industrial electrical control panels.
  • Proficiency in C#, .NET, Python, or SQL.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible for required export control authorizations.
