TL;DR · Applied Scientist, Satellite Build Systems

As an Applied Scientist on the Leo Satellite Build Systems team, you will develop the scientific intelligence layer powering satellite manufacturing systems. You will transform fragmented manufacturing, test, quality, and operational data into actionable insights to improve production workflows like non-conformance disposition and root-cause analysis. Your daily responsibilities include translating ambiguous problems into well-defined scientific models, designing experiments, and building production-quality components while balancing trade-offs between accuracy, latency, and cost. You will utilize machine learning, LLM-based systems, retrieval models, and state-of-the-art techniques in anomaly detection, multimodal learning, and generative AI. The role requires proficiency in Python, Java, or C++, alongside expertise in algorithms, data structures, and numerical optimization. This position solves complex manufacturing challenges by creating intelligent, data-driven systems to reduce defects and accelerate production within a high-stakes aerospace environment.

What you'll do

  • Translate ambiguous manufacturing and operational problems into well-defined scientific problems and modeling approaches.
  • Design, train, and deploy machine learning models including LLM-based systems and retrieval models.
  • Develop models using large-scale, noisy, and heterogeneous datasets with imperfect ground truth.
  • Apply state-of-the-art techniques in anomaly detection, root-cause inference, and generative AI to manufacturing workflows.
  • Design experiment frameworks that account for real-world failure modes, distribution shift, and decision risk.
  • Balance model complexity against practical constraints like accuracy, latency, cost, and maintainability.
  • Build production-quality scientific components with integrated testing, documentation, and monitoring mechanisms.
  • Analyze system performance to identify gaps and iteratively improve deployed manufacturing solutions.

What we're looking for

  • Candidates must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or granted asylum/refugee status for export control compliance.
  • Must have 3+ years of experience building models for business applications.
  • Must have a PhD, or a Master's degree and 4+ years of experience in CS, CE, ML, or a related field.
  • Experience with patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals.
  • Experience programming in Java, C++, Python, or other related languages.
  • Experience in areas such as algorithms, data structures, numerical optimization, data mining, or distributed computing.
