JOB TITLE: AI Software Engineer Spring Co-op 2027 As an AI Software Engineer Spring Co-op 2027, you will join the IBM Z team to integrate large language models into foundational systems supporting global commerce, banking, and payments. You will work alongside experienced engineers to design, build, and test AI-powered features, such as diagnostic agents or tools for simplifying complex system operations. Your daily tasks include integrating LLMs, APIs, and enterprise data, writing clear specifications and prompts, and debugging across model interactions and application code. You must possess strong software engineering fundamentals, proficiency in Python, and experience building prototypes with LLMs. The role requires technical skills in Git, data structures, and algorithms, with preferred experience in RAG, vector databases, Docker, Kubernetes, and languages like Go or TypeScript to solve reliability and performance challenges.

What you'll do

Design, build, and test AI-powered features that address specific developer and client needs.
Integrate large language models (LLMs), APIs, and enterprise data into functional applications.
Write clear technical specifications and effective prompts for AI development tools.
Evaluate AI behavior using realistic test cases to measure quality and performance.
Debug complex issues across model interactions, application code, and underlying systems.
Document work and iterate on features based on technical feedback and code reviews.

What we're looking for

Must be actively enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program at the time of application and returning to complete the degree after the co-op.
Must be available to work full-time (40 hours/week) for 16 weeks between Jan 19 - May 7 without concurrent coursework.
Must be available to start a full-time role between December 2027 and August 2028.
High School Diploma/GED is required.
Bachelor's Degree (preferred).
Strong software engineering fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, software design, and testing.
Proficiency in Python and experience building applications or services that integrate APIs.
Hands-on experience building an application or prototype with LLMs, including integration and testing.
Systematic debugging mindset to investigate failures across models, application code, APIs, and underlying systems.
Ability to translate problems into clear requirements, prompts, and testable acceptance criteria.
Familiarity with Git, technical communication, and the ability to learn quickly in a team environment.
Experience with AI agents, RAG, vector databases, or Model Context Protocol (preferred).
Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, distributed systems, or microservices (preferred).
Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, or real-time data tools like Kafka (preferred).
Experience in AI evaluation, anomaly detection, or measuring model accuracy and latency (preferred).
