The Workflow Automation SRE, ASE Data Services joins the Services Engineering organization to build and maintain a durable workflow orchestration platform for the Data Services fleet. This role involves replacing legacy systems and manual runbooks with observable, resumable workflows for critical operations like rolling upgrades, host replacements, and cluster expansions. You will design and build workers and workflow definitions, composing operations across host and pod provisioning, topology discovery, and monitoring systems. The position requires proficiency in Java, with Go or Python being valuable. You will manage distributed databases including Cassandra, Redis/Valkey, Kafka, Solr, ZooKeeper, and etcd. The work focuses on automating complex database operational concepts like ring balancing and recovery semantics across bare-metal, virtualized, and Kubernetes platforms to ensure the reliability of internet-facing services.
Design, build, and operate durable workflow automation for Data Services operations like rolling upgrades and cluster expansions.
Write workflow and activity code to compose per-node management APIs, provisioning APIs, and monitoring systems into resumable operations.
Migrate operational logic from legacy workflow systems and manual runbooks onto a durable execution model with retry and signal capabilities.
Build developer and operator tools including CLIs and execution visibility for submitting, monitoring, and debugging running operations.
Apply SRE practices such as monitoring, alerting, and incident management to the automation platform and the operations it drives.
Automate complex database concepts including drain and recovery semantics, ring balancing, and health validation against live clusters.
Deploy and manage workers across bare-metal, virtualized, and containerized (Kubernetes) platforms while reasoning about cross-datacenter connectivity.
What we're looking for
BS or MS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
5+ years of experience in a Site Reliability Engineering or infrastructure-focused engineering role.
Proficiency in Java, with proficiency in Go or Python also being valuable (preferred).
Hands-on experience designing or operating workflow, orchestration, or job-scheduling systems for long-running, failure-prone operations.
Experience supporting internet-facing production services and distributed systems via deployments, on-call, and incident management.
Experience running large-scale infrastructure with a heavy reliance on automation tooling and managing services at scale on Kubernetes.
Experience operating or building tooling for distributed databases and storage systems like Cassandra, Redis, Kafka, or Solr (preferred).
Experience operating in datacenter and cloud architectures, including networking topologies and multi-datacenter system design (preferred).
