Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Observability)

What you'll do

• Own the architecture of the telemetry pipeline to balance reliability, query performance, and cost.
• Design log sampling strategies to reduce volume and cost while maintaining signal during incidents.
• Integrate observability into agentic development to ensure AI-assisted code is well-instrumented by default.
• Define the long-term technical strategy and roadmap for the observability platform.
• Manage team operations by establishing monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, and alerting policies.
• Set code review and design standards to foster a culture of quality and ownership.
• Mentor and develop the talent of a team of six engineers through feedback and guidance.

What we're looking for

• You have 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
• You have an extensive track record of developing highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Flink, and Kubernetes.
• You have built or operated high-volume telemetry systems using technologies like OpenTelemetry, Kafka, and Terraform.
• You have a well-informed point of view on modern observability practices such as structured and wide events, sampling, cardinality management, and SLOs.
• You have experience delivering major features or system components through the definition of a technical and execution plan.
• You have strong verbal and written communication skills to support effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
• You have experience driving the adoption of platform standards across many engineering teams through tooling and engagement.
• This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
