TL;DR · Staff Hardware Engineer, ECU Requirements & Specifications

The Staff Hardware Engineer - ECU Requirements & Specifications joins the Compute & Connectivity Hardware team to provide technical leadership for the development and management of hardware requirements, low-level software definitions, and Component Technical Requirements Specifications. This role involves establishing technical direction for embedded-controller requirements across vehicle, electrical, and infrastructure software architectures. You will drive standardization of Input/Output interfaces, lead requirements reviews, and manage configuration for ECU hardware designs. Key responsibilities include ensuring traceability between internal and external requirements and supporting manufacturing and safety-critical applications. You will utilize tools such as DOORS Next-Gen, Jama, and Polarion, while leveraging AI to improve requirement quality. The role solves complex system interactions involving microcontrollers, memory technologies, and vehicle serial communications like Ethernet, CAN, LIN, SENT, and SERDES.

What you'll do

  • Lead the development, maintenance, and configuration management of ECU hardware electrical and functional interface requirements.
  • Establish technical direction for embedded-controller requirements across vehicle architecture, diagnostics, hardware design, and safety.
  • Drive the standardization of Input/Output interfaces and promote component commonization and reuse across ECU hardware designs.
  • Lead requirements reviews, design-flow execution, and change-control activities to ensure high-quality technical execution.
  • Provide technical leadership for CTRS compilation to support product-team sourcing and build-to-print implementation.
  • Establish and improve traceability between internal and external requirements and downstream verification and validation activities.
  • Identify requirements and design gaps and drive corrective actions for ECU, sub-component, and circuit-level designs.
  • Support requirements and specifications for ECU manufacturing, remanufacturing, and plant or service programming implementations.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 7 years of engineering experience in product development, technical requirements, specifications, embedded controls, or a related technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated leadership of complex technical programs or initiatives, including the ability to influence outcomes without direct authority.
  • Good knowledge and practical experience with structured requirements-management tools such as DOORS, DOORS Next-Gen, Jama, or Polarion.
  • Strong understanding of automotive embedded control systems, including ECU hardware, low-level software interfaces, diagnostics, and electrical or mechatronic architectures.
  • Knowledge of microcontrollers, memory technologies, and vehicle serial communications such as Ethernet, CAN, LIN, SENT, and SERDES.
  • Knowledge of semiconductor physics, structures, fundamentals, models, and failure mechanisms.
  • Master of Science degree in Engineering or a related field (preferred).
