TL;DR · Staff DFx Engineer, Mechanical & Fluid Systems

Staff DFx Engineer, Mechanical & Fluid Systems serves as the technical authority for design for manufacturability, assembly, and cost across mechanical, structural, thermal management, and fluid systems including fuel, hydraulics, and pneumatics. Joining the Air Dominance & Strike Manufacturing Engineering team, you will ensure that designs for autonomous aircraft, cruise missiles, and loitering munitions are buildable at scale by qualified suppliers. You will lead DFM/DFA/DFC reviews, conduct manufacturing assessments, develop should-cost models, and establish DFx standards for processes like CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, brazing, and composite layup. The role requires expertise in thermal management designs, such as heat exchangers and cooling loops, alongside fluid system components like tube routing and fitting selection. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate manufacturing constraints into actionable design improvements while mentoring junior engineers on cost analysis and supplier evaluation methods.

What you'll do

  • Lead DFM, DFA, and DFC reviews for mechanical, thermal, and fluid systems to identify and mitigate producibility and cost risks.
  • Conduct DFMEAs with cross-functional teams to drive design changes, inspection strategies, and control plans.
  • Evaluate and qualify contract manufacturers by assessing facility capabilities, process maturity, and cost competitiveness against requirements.
  • Develop should-cost models and perform cost-driver analyses to reduce unit costs without compromising quality or performance.
  • Establish DFx standards, scorecards, and toolkits for manufacturing processes like CNC machining, welding, and composite layup.
  • Assess thermal management designs and fluid system architectures for manufacturability and production at scale.
  • Partner with supply chain and quality teams to align design requirements with sourcing strategies and inspection plans.
  • Mentor junior engineers on DFx principles, cost analysis techniques, and supplier assessment methods.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, producibility engineering, or DFx with focus on mechanical, thermal, or fluid systems.
  • Expertise in mechanical manufacturing processes including CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, brazing, and composite layup.
  • Experience leading DFM/DFA reviews and evaluating/qualifying contract manufacturers for production readiness.
  • Ability to read and evaluate mechanical drawings, GD&T, 3D models, and assembly documentation.
  • Working knowledge of aerospace mechanical and fluid system standards such as AS9100, NAS, and SAE specifications.
  • Must be a U.S. Person due to export control requirements.
  • Master's degree in engineering or related field (preferred); active U.S. Secret clearance with Full-Scope Polygraph (preferred).
