Staff Battery Engineer (Pack Design/BMS)
As a Staff Battery Engineer, you will join the Core Battery Group to drive the development of energy storage systems for next-generation drone products. You will serve as the primary technical owner for battery packs, managing the entire lifecycle from initial concept and cell selection through prototype iterations to full-rate production. Your daily responsibilities include translating user stories into actionable requirements, collaborating with mechanical engineers on design revisions, performing root cause analysis on fielded systems, and supporting manufacturing scale-up using tools like DFMEAs. You will utilize technical skills in battery management system (BMS) electrical design, algorithms, and validation, as well as cell characterization and modeling in Matlab or Simulink. The role requires proficiency in CAD tools like CATIA or SolidWorks while ensuring compliance with safety standards such as UN38.3 and NAVSEA S9310 for demanding aerospace environments.
Drive end-to-end energy storage system development from initial concept through full-rate production on accelerated timelines.
Act as the primary technical interface between the Core Battery Group and internal product teams.
Translate user stories and concepts of operations into actionable technical requirements for battery systems.
Lead the selection, de-risking, and validation process for battery cells.
Manage design iterations with mechanical engineers to move from prototype packs to production units.
Support manufacturing engineering to scale production while ensuring reliability verification through tools like DFMEAs.
Perform hands-on battery bring-up, testing, debugging, and vehicle integration activities.
Conduct root cause analysis on fielded systems to develop countermeasures and design updates.
What we're looking for
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or fundamental Physical Sciences with an applied focus on energy storage technologies.
10+ years of experience designing, testing, and troubleshooting energy storage systems.
Proven experience taking at least one energy storage system from prototype to production.
Experience with battery pack design, prototype assembly, and technical ownership of high-performance energy storage systems.
Professional awareness of BMS electrical design, algorithms/software functionality, or validation against operational requirements.
Professional awareness of battery cell characterization methods or modeling/simulation in Matlab or Simulink.
Basic proficiency with CAD tools such as CATIA, NX, or SolidWorks.
