Sheet Metal Fabrication Tech - Prototype Development joins the Development Manufacturing team to transform engineering concepts into physical hardware for high-priority programs. This role involves building low-volume prototype components by taking projects from initial CAD models or drawings through flat pattern development, cutting, forming, and finishing. The technician will operate equipment including CNC press brakes, waterjets, lasers, and punches while performing secondary operations like deburring, drilling, and tapping. Key responsibilities include selecting tooling, planning bend sequences, and collaborating with engineers on design-for-fabrication considerations such as formability and bend relief. Required skills include reading technical drawings, using precision measuring tools, and applying shop math. Preferred qualifications include experience with NX, SolidWorks, OMAX, AMADA, or SigmaNEST software. The role focuses on the rapid development of hardware in a fast-paced environment where designs are frequently evolving before reaching final assembly.
Build prototype sheet-metal hardware from initial concept through completion using CAD models and technical drawings.
Develop flat patterns and bend sequences while accounting for material thickness, springback, and part geometry.
Set up, program, and operate fabrication equipment including CNC press brakes, waterjets, lasers, and punches.
Select tooling, establish setups, and troubleshoot issues affecting part quality or manufacturability.
Perform secondary operations such as deburring, drilling, tapping, hardware insertion, and light machining.
Inspect work throughout the build process to identify and correct defects before parts move downstream.
Partner with engineers to provide feedback on formability, bend relief, and design-for-fabrication considerations.
Maintain fabrication equipment and shop areas while adhering to all safety requirements.
What we're looking for
Must be a U.S. Person due to export-controlled information requirements.
2+ years of experience in sheet metal fabrication, machining, manufacturing, or a related mechanically focused field; or completion of an accredited vocational/technical program.
Ability to read and work from technical drawings, sketches, models, or fabrication instructions.
Working knowledge of basic shop math and experience using precision measuring tools.
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and ability to learn new equipment, processes, and technical concepts.
Ability to take ownership of assigned work with limited supervision while following safety procedures.
Experience setting up or operating CNC press brakes, laser cutters, waterjets, or comparable equipment (preferred).
Experience in prototype development, R&D, aerospace, automotive, or other low-volume environments (preferred).
