TL;DR · Senior Research Engineer, 3D Graphics Compression

Senior Research Engineer – 3D Graphics Compression joins the U.S. Research Center to drive innovation in 3D image processing, computer graphics, and 3D image compression. The role involves creating, validating, and optimizing algorithms for structure from motion, point clouds, meshes, and new representations like NeRF and Gaussian splats. Responsibilities include taking imaging concepts from initial design through product integration, performing feasibility studies, designing algorithm architectures using advanced mathematical principles, and ensuring cross-platform performance. The candidate will work with C/C++, Python, and machine learning libraries such as TensorFlow or PyTorch within Linux-based development environments. This position addresses the technical challenge of developing efficient, reproducible solutions for 3D data representation and compression while contributing to international standards and intellectual property filings. The role focuses on solving complex problems in multi-view imaging and high-quality 3D content delivery.

What you'll do

  • Develop, validate, and optimize algorithms for structure from motion, point clouds, meshes, and new representations like NeRF and Gaussian splats.
  • Evaluate emerging 3D compression technologies to ensure technical relevance for product integration.
  • Manage the full lifecycle of 3D imaging concepts from initial design through market release.
  • Perform feasibility studies and experimental evaluations to validate algorithm quality and capability.
  • Optimize algorithm performance across various platforms to meet cross-platform requirements.
  • Define test procedures and evaluation methodologies to ensure consistent results.
  • Draft invention disclosures for patent filing and contribute technical proposals to international standards meetings.
  • Write professional articles for technical journals to disseminate research findings.

What we're looking for

  • PhD or MS with at least 3 years of related experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in multi-view imaging, 3D image processing, 3D image compression, and computer graphics.
  • Research experience in point cloud, mesh, and/or Gaussian splats reconstruction and compression.
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++ and Python for production-quality code, performance profiling, and optimization.
  • Experience with machine learning libraries such as TensorFlow and/or PyTorch.
  • Proficiency in Linux-based development environments.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills including technical writing and cross-functional collaboration.
