TL;DR · Motor Controls Engineer (Electrical/PCB Design)

The Motor Controls Engineer (Electrical/PCB Design) joins the core product development team to design, implement, and test complex electro-mechanical systems including optical systems, batteries, mechanisms, and sensors. This role involves executing rapid evaluations of engineering concepts, performing physics-based trade studies, managing vendor relationships, and building prototypes to transition projects into production. The candidate will utilize first principles to solve blue-sky engineering problems while handling high levels of autonomy in hardware test plans and design reviews. Required skills include PCB design using ECAD tools like Altium or KiCAD, hands-on prototyping such as soldering and harnessing, and experience with motor/servo drive systems, microcontrollers, and power conversion. Technical competencies involve interpreting schematics, utilizing oscilloscopes and multimeters, and familiarity with communication protocols like CAN, I2C, and SPI to solve complex hardware integration challenges in defense technology.

What you'll do

  • Design, implement, and test complex electro-mechanical systems including motor controls, batteries, and sensors.
  • Build hardware prototypes, analyze failures, and transition successful designs into production.
  • Perform trade studies and physics-based analysis to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Manage vendor relationships and conduct market research for component selection and integration.
  • Lead design reviews and execute comprehensive hardware test plans.
  • Support critical hardware demonstrations with customers at various test sites.
  • Evaluate new engineering concepts across a wide range of technical fields.

What we're looking for

  • Must have a BS, MS, or PhD in an engineering field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
  • Requires 3+ years of electrical/design experience in a professional setting.
  • Experience in PCB design using ECAD tools like Altium or KiCAD is required.
  • Must have hands-on prototyping skills including soldering, board assembly, and harnessing.
  • Required experience with controls, actuation, robotics, or motor/servo drive systems.
  • Must be familiar with microcontrollers, power conversion, and system integration.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and manipulate schematics, wiring diagrams, and layouts is required.
