The Senior Infrastructure Engineer - Streaming Services/Materialization Platform joins the team responsible for the CDC and materialization pipelines that handle every write to core databases, including orders, inventory, and product data. You will build and operate these platforms to ensure high throughput and reliability for event-driven systems, solving complex production issues at scale and participating in an on-call rotation. Key responsibilities include leading impactful projects, contributing to open source and vendor codebases, and collaborating cross-functionally. You will utilize technologies such as Debezium, Kafka, Flink, Yugabyte, MySQL, and BigQuery, while applying coding patterns in Java or Go. This role addresses the technical challenge of maintaining data freshness and delivery guarantees for merchant-facing search and LLM agents within a high-scale commerce environment.
Build and operate Shopify's CDC and data materialization platforms to meet high throughput and reliability demands.
Solve complex production issues at scale and participate in a regular on-call rotation.
Lead the execution of impactful projects within the team's charter.
Contribute code back to open source and vendor codebases.
Use and shape the team's adoption of AI for design, coding, and collaboration.
Communicate technical designs and briefs to diverse audiences including leadership and non-technical stakeholders.
Drive engineering excellence by balancing operational strength with the shipping of new features.
What we're looking for
Experience in streaming (Debezium, Kafka), processing (Flink), or database (Yugabyte, MySQL, BigQuery) technologies (preferred).
Experience building or operating a CDC pipeline, working inside a distributed database, or debugging a streaming system under production load (preferred).
Proficiency in good coding patterns in any language, with Java or Go being ideal (preferred).
Experience operating large distributed systems at scale (preferred).
Experience leading projects, including scoping, structuring work, and driving execution (preferred).
Ability to move forward and solve problems when faced with ambiguous technical challenges (preferred).
Ability to participate in an on-call rotation.
Ability to complete a live pair programming session during the interview process.
