TL;DR · Senior Explosive Operations Engineer

Senior Explosive Operations Engineer The Senior Explosive Operations Engineer joins the Lethality Team to support the safe development, testing, and fielding of explosive systems across multiple product lines. This role moves explosive capabilities from development into test and field environments by building compliant, executable operations for land, sea, and air domains. You will plan and execute explosives operations, lead range safety activities, develop site laydowns, and draft operating instructions while ensuring compliance with DoD, ATF/ATFE, DOT, and OSHA requirements. Key responsibilities include managing inventory, providing subject matter expertise on handling and storage, and training personnel on safe practices. The role requires extensive experience in explosive safety, transportation, and field execution. You will collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and program teams to translate complex customer requirements into operational plans while ensuring high safety standards across all mission-critical programs.

What you'll do

  • Plan, organize, and execute explosives operations for current and future product lines across land, sea, and air domains.
  • Perform hands-on explosives operations in test, field, and operational environments.
  • Lead range safety activities and ensure compliance with DoD, ATF, DOT, and OSHA regulations.
  • Develop site laydowns, blast/fragmentation considerations, quantity-distance evaluations, and other mitigation strategies.
  • Draft and enforce explosive safety procedures and operating instructions for all personnel.
  • Manage explosives storage including inventory, security, inspections, and forecasting.
  • Train and instruct others on safe handling and operational execution of energetic materials.
  • Translate complex customer requirements into executable operational plans in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

What we're looking for

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in explosives operations including safety, storage, transportation, and test or field execution.
  • Hands-on experience executing or supporting explosive operations in operational, test, range, or field environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of DoD, ATF/ATFE, DOT, and OSHA regulations regarding explosives and energetic materials.
  • Experience developing or enforcing SOPs, safety practices, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, operations, and program teams.
  • Ability to travel 25%–50%, including domestic test sites and occasional international travel.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. security clearance (DoD Secret or DOE L) and ATF background screening.
  • Ability to obtain a valid DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate and required commercial driver’s licenses.
  • Military EOD or equivalent explosives operations background (preferred).
  • Experience in an explosive production or manufacturing facility (preferred).
  • Active U.S. Top Secret or DOE Q security clearance (preferred).
  • Experience with munitions field testing, explosives training, or leadership in explosive operations environments (preferred).
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline (preferred).
  • Experience operating in austere environments and engaging with internal teams and external customers (preferred).
