As a Senior AI Software Engineer on the AI Engineering team at T. Rowe Price Labs, you will independently design, build, and scale production-grade AI agents and intelligent systems. You will lead technical workstreams to solve complex business problems by incubating new products and experimenting with emerging technologies. Your daily responsibilities include owning end-to-end delivery, including architecture, testing, deployment, and observability. You will design agentic workflows using orchestration, tool integration, retrieval-based systems, and structured outputs. The role requires proficiency in Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript, along with experience in cloud-native architectures, containerized microservices, and APIs. You will apply modern AI engineering patterns like prompt engineering and guardrails to move systems beyond prototypes into production while mentoring other engineers and managing technical debt.
Design, build, and scale production-grade AI agents and intelligent systems to solve complex business problems.
Develop agentic workflows using orchestration, tool integration, retrieval-based systems, and human-in-the-loop patterns.
Lead technical workstreams from initial rapid experimentation and validation through to full production adoption.
Establish evaluation and testing approaches for non-deterministic AI systems, including quality metrics and failure analysis.
Make engineering trade-offs regarding model performance, latency, cost, reliability, security, and maintainability.
Mentor less-experienced engineers and lead code and design reviews to ensure high engineering quality.
Translate complex business needs into scalable technology solutions while communicating technical trade-offs to stakeholders.
Rapidly evaluate emerging AI technologies to determine their applicability for delivering measurable business value.
What we're looking for
BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
Strong hands-on development experience in object-oriented languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
Hands-on experience building AI-enabled applications, intelligent workflows, or agentic systems using modern LLMs and AI development frameworks.
Practical experience with modern AI engineering patterns such as agent orchestration, tool/function calling, retrieval-based systems, and prompt engineering.
Experience taking AI-enabled systems beyond prototypes toward production, including testing, monitoring, reliability, security, and operational considerations.
Strong experience with cloud-native architectures, containerized microservices, APIs, and modern software delivery practices.
Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical workstreams (preferred); understanding of financial markets or asset management (preferred).
