As a Lead AI Software Engineer within the AI Engineering squad at T. Rowe Price Labs, you will lead the architecture, design, and delivery of production-grade AI agents and intelligent systems. You will drive the incubation of new AI products, manage technical trade-offs regarding latency, cost, and security, and mentor engineers through complex, ambiguous problems. Your daily work involves building reusable AI capabilities, including agent orchestration, retrieval-based systems, and evaluation frameworks. You will utilize Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript to develop cloud-native solutions on AWS using containerized microservices and APIs. This role solves the technical challenge of transitioning experimental AI models into scalable, reliable enterprise solutions while establishing engineering standards for observability, guardrails, and responsible deployment across the firm's broader technology landscape.
Lead the architecture, design, development, and deployment of production-grade AI agents and intelligent systems.
Set technical direction for AI solutions by making trade-offs regarding models, orchestration, latency, cost, and security.
Define engineering standards for production AI, including evaluation, testing, observability, guardrails, and failure handling.
Guide the development of reusable AI capabilities and shared platform components across the enterprise.
Provide hands-on technical leadership and mentorship to engineers to improve architecture and execution quality.
Drive the Build-Operate-Transfer model by incubating new products and transitioning them to business-aligned technology teams.
Translate complex business needs into robust AI architectures by engaging directly with stakeholders and product owners.
Evaluate emerging models and frameworks to provide technical direction on adoption strategies.
What we're looking for
BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
8+ years of progressive software engineering experience.
Extensive hands-on experience in object-oriented languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
Deep hands-on experience designing and delivering AI-enabled systems, intelligent workflows, or agentic applications in production or near-production environments.
Strong expertise in modern AI engineering patterns including agent orchestration, retrieval-based systems, prompt engineering, and observability.
Extensive experience architecting cloud-native solutions using AWS or equivalent, containerized microservices, and APIs.
Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and raising technical capability across teams.
Experience establishing engineering standards or technical direction across multiple teams (preferred).
Understanding of financial markets, asset management, or financial instruments (preferred).
