TL;DR · Quantum Control Systems FPGA Developer Internship

Quantum Control Systems FPGA Developer Internship 2027 is a role within the IBM Quantum team focused on developing the world’s first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer. You will develop, implement, and debug FPGA logic for quantum control and measurement systems while integrating hardware components into larger systems. Your daily work involves building software and automation tools for data collection and lab instrumentation control, as well as supporting qubit experiments and calibration routines. The role requires proficiency in Python, Jupyter Notebooks, Git, Linux, and command-line environments. You will utilize HDL languages like Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL to design digital logic on FPGAs. Technical skills include experience with Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, microcontrollers, and test equipment such as oscilloscopes and VNAs. This position addresses the technical challenge of designing logic units and embedded software for next-generation quantum computing systems.

What you'll do

  • Develop, implement, and debug FPGA logic for quantum control and measurement systems.
  • Integrate FPGA components, embedded software, and hardware into larger quantum systems.
  • Create software and automation tools for data collection and lab instrumentation control.
  • Debug embedded systems, ASICs, and low-level hardware/software interactions.
  • Support qubit experiments, calibration routines, and system performance evaluations.
  • Perform signal processing and digital filtering for quantum computing applications.

What we're looking for

  • Pursuing a Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field (preferred).
  • Experience with Python, Jupyter Notebooks, Git, Linux, and command-line environments.
  • Experience designing or implementing digital logic on FPGAs.
  • Familiarity with HDL development using Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL.
  • Experience with embedded systems and laboratory equipment.
  • Experience with FPGA development tools like Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus (preferred).
  • Experience with microcontrollers, low-level programming, and test equipment such as oscilloscopes or VNAs (preferred).
