TL;DR · Quantum Control Pulse-Level Compiler Intern

As a Quantum Control Pulse-Level Compiler Intern 2027, you will join the IBM Quantum team to develop and extend a pulse-level quantum compiler. You will be responsible for designing and implementing compiler passes and backend targets specifically for a distributed, heterogeneous, hard-real-time microwave control system used in superconducting quantum computers. Your daily work involves developing software and automation tools to validate compiler correctness and real-time performance while collaborating with FPGA and runtime development teams to integrate outputs with hardware targets. The role requires proficiency in Rust, Python, Git, Linux, and command-line environments. Ideal candidates possess experience in compiler design, robotics or real-time control systems, and microwave or RF signal chains. This position addresses the technical challenge of supporting next-generation logical qubit control systems within a complex quantum computing infrastructure.

What you'll do

  • Extend and enhance a pulse-level quantum compiler for next-generation logical qubit control systems.
  • Design and implement compiler passes for distributed, heterogeneous, hard-real-time microwave control systems.
  • Develop backend targets for hardware-specific microwave control systems.
  • Create software and automation tools to test and validate compiler correctness.
  • Build tools to verify the real-time performance of the quantum compiler.
  • Integrate compiler output with hardware targets in coordination with FPGA and runtime teams.

What we're looking for

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's Degree (preferred).
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with Rust and Python.
  • Experience in compiler design/implementation, robotics or real-time control systems, or microwave/RF systems.
  • Experience with Git, Linux, and command-line environments.
  • Experience with pulse-level or hardware-aware quantum compilation (preferred).
  • Familiarity with hard-real-time systems, microwave/RF signal chains, or quantum computing concepts (preferred).
