TL;DR · Product Counsel

JOB TITLE: Product Counsel The Product Counsel joins the Legal team to provide pragmatic legal advice to product, engineering, data science, marketing, compliance, and sales teams. This role involves partnering with teams building core platform infrastructure and enterprise offerings to identify and mitigate legal risks. Key responsibilities include advising on the machine learning model lifecycle, platform and API design, and identity, authentication, and account security. The candidate will translate legal requirements into technical requirements, reviewing design documents, data models, and architecture proposals. Required expertise includes regulatory compliance, privacy, intellectual property, consumer protection, and artificial intelligence. The role specifically addresses the shifting global AI legal landscape, data-use rights, and the legal requirements shaping access-control design for a fast-paced technology platform serving restaurants and local businesses.

What you'll do

  • Advise product, engineering, and marketing teams on legal risks throughout the entire product development lifecycle.
  • Provide practical legal guidance on regulatory compliance, consumer protection, intellectual property, and privacy.
  • Counsel teams on the design and deployment of core platform infrastructure, APIs, and AI-driven systems.
  • Translate complex legal requirements into technical specifications and guidance for engineers to build against.
  • Advise on machine learning model lifecycles, including training data rights and model governance.
  • Review design documents, data models, and architecture proposals to ensure compliance with U.S. and international laws.
  • Develop scalable legal processes such as playbooks, intake triage systems, and decision trees.
  • Review marketing strategies and assets to mitigate legal risks before launch.

What we're looking for

  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school and membership in at least one state bar.
  • 5+ years of legal experience in regulatory compliance, privacy, intellectual property, and consumer protection.
  • In-house legal department experience advising product, engineering, and marketing teams on new products and feature requests.
  • Technical fluency to read architecture documentation, reason about data flows, schemas, APIs, and model behavior.
  • Experience with AI or machine learning issues including training data rights, model governance, or emerging AI regulation.
  • Experience with data-use and data-rights questions regarding aggregation, de-identification, and contractual commitments.
  • Experience working with fast-paced technology or software companies.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to explain complex ideas in a succinct and impactful manner.
