TL;DR · Principal Platform Software Engineer

The Principal Platform Software Engineer joins the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure team to develop distributed services, APIs, and developer tooling that improve the developer experience. You will own major platform components from technical design through production operation, turning developer pain points into reusable capabilities. Your daily work involves building scalable distributed services, prototyping solutions, and providing technical leadership and mentorship. You will specifically focus on AI-native software engineering by building and evaluating AI-enabled workflows and applying agentic techniques to software maintenance while ensuring security and reliability. Required skills include proficiency in Java, REST and gRPC services, full-stack development, and distributed systems. You will utilize SQL and NoSQL data stores, Kubernetes, containers, and Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform to solve complex engineering productivity problems.

What you'll do

  • Design and build scalable distributed services, APIs, and developer tools for OCI engineering teams.
  • Own major platform components from initial technical design through implementation and production rollout.
  • Identify recurring developer pain points and transform them into reusable platform capabilities.
  • Prototype solutions and perform hands-on implementation, debugging, and performance tuning.
  • Apply AI-assisted and agentic techniques to software implementation, testing, and maintenance workflows.
  • Build and evaluate AI-enabled developer tools to automate recurring engineering tasks.
  • Provide technical leadership through design reviews, code reviews, and clear technical documentation.
  • Operate production services and participate in on-call incident response and troubleshooting.

What we're looking for

  • BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 6 to 10+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Proficiency in Java and experience building REST and/or gRPC services.
  • Experience building full-stack software, including backend services and user-facing tools or web applications.
  • Strong knowledge of data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and distributed systems.
  • Experience designing, building, and operating highly available, scalable distributed systems.
  • Experience with distributed databases and SQL and/or NoSQL data stores.
  • Experience with modern engineering practices including source control, code review, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with production observability, operational automation, incident response, troubleshooting, and performance tuning.
  • Ability to provide hands-on technical leadership, mentor engineers, and improve engineering practices through design and code reviews.
  • Practical experience applying AI-assisted development techniques and critically validating generated code, tests, designs, or analysis.
  • Experience building developer platforms, developer tooling, CI/CD systems, or engineering productivity capabilities (preferred).
  • Experience building AI-enabled developer tools, coding agents, or agentic engineering workflows (preferred).
  • Experience developing and operating services on OCI, AWS, Azure, or another public cloud (preferred).
  • Experience with Kubernetes, containers, and Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform (preferred).
  • Experience with multi-tenant services, capacity planning, caching, throttling, and performance isolation (preferred).
