TL;DR · Performance Control Software Engineer, Platform Architecture

The Performance Control Software Engineer - Platform Architecture joins the Platform Architecture team to measure, analyze, and control the relationship between power and performance in advanced systems. This role involves studying workload execution on Apple silicon to develop new operating system performance control features. Key responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments to characterize execution efficiency under physical constraints like temperature or power delivery, creating instrumentation and data visualizations, and prototyping innovative in-kernel performance control algorithms. The position requires collaborating with cross-functional teams across processor architecture, silicon engineering, and OS development. Candidates should possess experience in operating system design and kernel software development using C or C++. Preferred skills include knowledge of computer architecture, hardware performance monitoring, and proficiency in tools like DTrace, Instruments, or perf, alongside familiarity with statistical modeling to interpret complex power metrics.

What you'll do

  • Design and prototype kernel features related to performance control, power management, and scheduling.
  • Conduct experiments to characterize execution efficiency under physical constraints like temperature and power delivery.
  • Use empirical methodology to identify and analyze power-performance tradeoffs.
  • Create instrumentation tools and data visualizations for performance metrics.
  • Develop and productize in-kernel algorithms that control workload performance across Apple devices.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the measurement and control capabilities of Apple silicon.
  • Analyze the execution of workloads on Apple silicon across all hardware platforms.

What we're looking for

  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a similar engineering degree.
  • Experience with operating system design and implementation.
  • Kernel software development experience in C or C++.
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant industry experience (preferred).
  • MS in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a similar engineering degree (preferred).
  • Knowledge of computer architecture and hardware performance monitoring instrumentation (preferred).
  • Userland software development experience in environments such as C, C++, Swift, or Python (preferred).
  • Experience with system-level profiling, debugging tools, tracing frameworks, data analysis, or statistical modeling (preferred).
