TL;DR · Performance Control Software Engineer, Platform Architecture

As a Performance Control Software Engineer - Platform Architecture, you will join the Platform Architecture team to measure, analyze, and control the relationship between power and performance in advanced systems. You will study workload execution on Apple silicon across all platforms to develop new operating system performance control features. Your daily responsibilities include designing experiments to characterize execution efficiency under physical constraints like temperature or power delivery, creating instrumentation and data visualizations, and prototyping in-kernel algorithms for power management and scheduling. The role requires proficiency in C, C++, Swift, or Python, along with experience in kernel software development, computer architecture, and hardware performance monitoring. You will utilize tools such as DTrace, Instruments, and perf to analyze complex metrics while collaborating across teams to improve the measurement and control capabilities of Apple silicon for various workloads.

What you'll do

  • Design and prototype kernel features related to performance control, power management, and scheduling.
  • Conduct experiments to characterize execution efficiency under physical constraints like temperature and power delivery.
  • Use empirical methodology to identify and analyze power-performance tradeoffs.
  • Create instrumentation and data visualizations to interpret complex performance metrics.
  • Develop in-kernel algorithms to control the performance of workloads on Apple silicon.
  • Identify opportunities to improve measurement and control capabilities for Apple hardware.
  • Productize software that manages performance for millions of consumer devices.

What we're looking for

  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a similar engineering degree.
  • Academic or practical experience with operating system design and implementation.
  • MS in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a similar engineering degree (preferred).
  • Kernel software development experience in C or C++ (preferred).
  • Knowledge of computer architecture and hardware performance monitoring instrumentation (preferred).
  • Userland software development experience in environments such as C, C++, Swift, or Python (preferred).
  • Experience with system-level performance profiling, debugging tools, and tracing frameworks like DTrace, Instruments, or perf (preferred).
  • Familiarity with data analysis, statistical modeling, or visualization techniques to interpret complex power and performance metrics (preferred).
