TL;DR · Perception Systems Engineer

As a Perception Systems Engineer on the Maneuver Dominance, Enabling Technology team, you will serve as a technical leader for autonomous aircraft sensing systems. You will drive the perception system architecture, defining requirements for detection, range, and field of regard while managing the sensor suite baseline across various platforms. Your daily work involves developing verification and validation strategies, performing sensor characterization, and leading trade studies to resolve complex design forks. You will manage multi-modal sensor architectures involving electro-optical, LiDAR, and RADAR technologies, ensuring seamless integration with compute systems and autonomy consumers. The role requires expertise in radiometry, link budgets, and signal metrics like NETD and MTF. You will solve the critical problem of enabling autonomous aircraft to understand their environment by creating a coherent, multi-sensor image of the world for coordinated aerial robotic operations.

What you'll do

  • Define the perception system architecture by decomposing mission needs into technical requirements like detection range, latency, and availability.
  • Manage the sensor suite baseline, including hardware selection, installation locations, and interface specifications across various aircraft platforms.
  • Develop and defend sensing performance models based on radiometry, detector performance, and flight test results.
  • Lead the verification and validation strategy, including bench testing, hardware-in-the-loop coverage, and flight test data analysis.
  • Act as the technical authority during design reviews to ensure perception evidence meets required standards before program integration.
  • Conduct sensor trade studies to resolve technical conflicts by defining criteria and documenting results for long-term use.
  • Drive modularity and reuse through sensor abstraction and stable interfaces to support multi-platform compatibility.
  • Represent the company as a technical authority with external partners, vendors, and industry bodies regarding airborne sensing.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Optics, Physics, Computer Science, Robotics, Aerospace, or a similar field.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience on electro-optical, LiDAR, RADAR, or comparable sensing systems as a technical owner.
  • Demonstrated depth in multi-modal sensor architecture and the detection physics governing each modality.
  • Experience owning system architecture and interface definition for sensing systems including compute, autonomy consumers, and vehicles.
  • Ability to quantify and verify sensing performance, including detection/false alarm characterization and range analysis.
  • Working command of sensing engineering fundamentals such as radiometry, link budgets, and atmospheric transmission effects.
  • Proficiency in systems engineering rigor including requirements management, traceability, and technical performance measures.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a US Top Secret security clearance.
  • Experience with learned perception in safety-relevant systems (preferred).
  • Experience with embedded compute, SWaP-C budgeting, and environmental qualifications like MIL-STD-810 (preferred).
  • Experience transitioning capabilities into delivery programs or participating in industry standards bodies (preferred).
