Operations Manufacturing Design PhD Internships offers opportunities within the Operations team to bridge product design and manufacturing execution. Candidates will work as Manufacturing Design Engineers, Manufacturing Quality Engineers, Subject Matter Experts, or Operations Program Managers. Responsibilities include optimizing manufacturing processes for mechanical enclosure subassemblies, developing high-efficiency inspection equipment, leading innovative process development trials, and managing complex projects across multiple organizations. The role involves collaborating with global suppliers to qualify partners, refine tooling, and implement quality plans. Key technical skills and tools include experience in metal forming, plastic injection molding, surface finishing techniques like anodizing and electroplating, and automation systems involving mechanical, control, and vision components. Candidates must possess expertise in design of experiments, root cause analysis, statistical process control, and geometric dimension and tolerance to solve challenges related to product manufacturability and scale.
Select and optimize manufacturing processes for mechanical enclosure subassemblies of high-volume products.
Evaluate product features for manufacturability and recommend appropriate production methods and equipment.
Innovate new manufacturing processes and conduct designs of experiments to validate process capability.
Partner with global suppliers to identify, qualify, and manage production capacity, quality, and costs.
Develop state-of-the-art inspection systems and measurement tools for product quality assurance.
Define and implement specific product quality plans and technical guidance for manufacturing programs.
Research and develop advanced surface finishes, coatings, and automated assembly processes.
Manage complex projects from inception to completion while driving cost and labor improvements across global markets.
What we're looking for
Must be currently pursuing a PhD in mechanical engineering, material science, industrial engineering, or a related field.
Must have experience working in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
Proven capability in developing quality plans, validating test methods and gauges, and driving corrective actions/failure analysis.
Deep knowledge of quality and reliability concepts, supplier management, and general manufacturing operations.
Preferred experience with project management and problem-solving tools like design of experiments, root cause analysis, and statistical process control.
Preferred technical experience with mechanical enclosures, plastic parts, injection molding, tooling, or high-volume automotive manufacturing.
Preferred knowledge of geometric dimension and tolerance, material properties, and statistics.
Ability to travel periodically both domestically and overseas.
