TL;DR · Mission Software Engineer, Undersea Reconnaissance & Strike

Mission Software Engineer - Undersea Reconnaissance & Strike works within the Anduril Maritime team to develop autonomous underwater and surface vehicles. This role focuses on identifying, reproducing, and resolving field-reported anomalies in complex systems including sensor data streams, mission logic, and navigation. You will investigate real-world bugs by replaying recorded data through live pipelines, utilizing existing metrics and log infrastructure like Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, or ELK to reconstruct system states. The position requires proficiency in at least two of Rust, C++, Python, or Go, alongside Linux systems fluency and experience with observability tools. You will build robust fixes within the production codebase for hardware-integrated software while contributing to the team's triage runbooks. This role addresses critical technical challenges in maritime autonomy, ensuring reliable performance for underwater reconnaissance and strike capabilities in demanding environments.

What you'll do

  • Identify the specific subsystem responsible for field-reported anomalies in sensor data or mission logic.
  • Reproduce reported bugs by replaying recorded sensor and mission data through live pipelines.
  • Use existing metrics and log infrastructure to reconstruct system states at the moment of failure.
  • Validate fixes in simulated environments and hardware-in-the-loop setups before deploying to vehicles.
  • Write and test code fixes in Rust, C++, Python, or Go using standard CI and versioned rollout paths.
  • Distinguish between bugs, configuration errors, and deployment mismatches to ensure the fix occurs at the correct layer.
  • Document root causes and technical details for every closed issue to build team runbooks.
  • Advocate for fundamental subsystem changes rather than temporary patches when identifying systemic issues.

What we're looking for

  • Experience debugging code you did not write under time pressure with incomplete information.
  • Proficiency in at least two of Rust, modern C++, Python, or Go.
  • Systems-debugging skills including using logs and metrics to reconstruct system states and reproduce issues offline.
  • Experience with observability tooling such as Prometheus/Grafana-class metrics and Loki/ELK-class logs.
  • Linux and systems fluency.
  • Ability to clearly document root causes and technical fixes without fluff.
  • Willingness to travel at least 25% of the time on average.
