TL;DR · Microgrid Controls Engineer

The Microgrid Controls Engineer joins the AES US Renewables & Power team to design, develop, test, and commission microgrid control solutions. This role involves integrating natural-gas generation, battery energy storage systems, solar generation, and utility interconnections to provide reliable automation and SCADA systems. Daily responsibilities include developing control philosophies, programming automation controllers using ladder logic, structured text, or function block diagrams in CODESYS-compatible environments, and configuring industrial communications via Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850. The engineer will also manage HMI platforms like Ignition Perspective, prepare bills of materials, and execute factory and site acceptance testing. The position requires technical expertise in power-distribution controls, distributed energy resources, and low- to medium-voltage switchgear to solve complex electrical distribution and microgrid transition management problems.

What you'll do

  • Design and implement microgrid control solutions integrating natural-gas generators, battery storage, solar PV, and utility interconnections.
  • Develop and deploy software for automation controllers, PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and data concentrators.
  • Create control philosophies, sequences of operation, functional descriptions, alarm strategies, and test procedures.
  • Program controls using ladder logic, structured text, function block diagrams, and CODESYS-compatible environments.
  • Configure and integrate industrial communications using protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850.
  • Prepare and execute factory acceptance testing, integrated system testing, site acceptance testing, and commissioning procedures.
  • Troubleshoot software, communications, controls, network, protection, and equipment-integration issues in factory and field environments.
  • Maintain software configurations, backups, source files, test records, and as-built documentation.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • Typically 4 to 8 years of experience in power-distribution controls, industrial automation, microgrids, SCADA, or power-system control applications.
  • Understanding of electric power systems, microgrid operations, distributed energy resources, natural-gas generators, BESS, and solar PV.
  • Knowledge of low- and medium-voltage switchgear, protection relays, power monitoring, control systems, and electrical distribution equipment.
  • Knowledge of industrial communications protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, and IEC 61850.
  • Experience with HMIs, SCADA platforms, industrial networks, data concentrators, and multifunction protection-relay controls.
  • Experience programming automation controllers or PLCs using ladder logic, structured text, function block diagrams, or CODESYS (preferred).
  • Work authorization.
