The Controls Engineer, Data Center Engineering joins the Infrastructure Services team to design, implement, and optimize integrated automation and control systems for global data center infrastructure. This role bridges electrical power control and mechanical building automation, requiring the candidate to manage the full project lifecycle from specification authorship and construction administration to commissioning and operational improvement. Key responsibilities include programming PLCs, PACs, and DDC controllers, and integrating electrical and mechanical data into the Data Center Information System platform. The role utilizes technologies including MQTT, Inductive Automation's Ignition, Python, and IEC 61131-3 languages like Structured Text and Ladder Diagram. Candidates must possess expertise in systems such as Schneider Electric Modicon, Siemens Desigo, and Tridium Niagara to solve complex problems involving high-availability electrical power distribution and mechanical cooling systems.
Design automation and control systems for electrical infrastructure and mechanical systems like chilled water plants and cooling towers.
Author and iterate on control system specifications and sequences of operations based on construction feedback and RFI trends.
Configure and program PLCs, PACs, and DDC controllers or provide technical oversight for third-party providers.
Integrate electrical and mechanical system data into the Ignition-based HMI environment over MQTT.
Oversee the commissioning of control systems to ensure they perform to design intent before operational handoff.
Troubleshoot controls and monitoring issues using fault detection and diagnostics to protect facility reliability.
Provide training and mentorship to operations personnel on control systems and the DCIS environment.
What we're looking for
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, or Controls Engineering, or equivalent job-related experience.
5+ years of engineering experience with control systems in data centers or mission-critical environments for both electrical power and mechanical/HVAC systems.
Experience programming DDC/PLC controllers and redlining controls drawings.
Understanding of controls for high-availability electrical systems (EPMS, MV PDCS) and mechanical systems (chilled water plants, BAS).
8+ years of experience with data center control systems across design, construction, and commissioning phases (preferred).
Proficiency in IEC 61131-3 programming languages (ST, LD, FBD, IL) (preferred).
Experience with field communication protocols (BACnet, Modbus, OPC UA, IEC 61850) and data center information system stacks (MQTT, Ignition) (preferred).
Practical knowledge of specific control platforms (Schneider Electric, Siemens, Johnson Controls, Tridium Niagara, SEL RTAC) (preferred).
