TL;DR · Member of Technical Staff Robotics Simulation

Member of Technical Staff, Microsoft Robotics (Robotics Simulation) joins the robotics team to lead the development of physics-ready 3D asset generation pipelines and reality capture integration. The role focuses on bridging physical and simulated worlds by creating high-fidelity digital representations of environments, objects, and robots. You will build automated workflows to convert photogrammetry, LiDAR scans, and depth maps into simulation-ready assets with accurate geometry and material properties. Key responsibilities include developing toolchains for mesh optimization, PBR material assignment, and synthetic data generation for training perception and navigation models. Required skills include proficiency in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, alongside experience with 3D reconstruction, neural rendering techniques like NeRF and Gaussian splatting, and industry-standard formats such as USD/OpenUSD and glTF. You will solve the challenge of moving robotics solutions from experimentation to reliable, scaled deployment through high-fidelity simulation.

What you'll do

  • Build automated pipelines to convert photogrammetry, LiDAR, and depth scans into physics-ready 3D simulation assets.
  • Develop toolchains for mesh optimization, PBR material assignment, and collision hull generation for 3D objects.
  • Integrate reality capture technologies like NeRF and Gaussian splatting into the robotics simulation platform.
  • Create 3D reconstruction workflows to build simulation environments from real-world facility scans.
  • Maintain asset toolchains supporting industry-standard formats such as USD, glTF, and FBX with physics metadata.
  • Develop synthetic data generation pipelines to produce training data for perception, manipulation, and navigation models.
  • Implement quality assurance workflows to validate mesh integrity, rendering fidelity, and simulation stability.
  • Research and integrate emerging 3D reconstruction and neural rendering techniques into the platform.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field is required.
  • Candidates must have 4+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Ability to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check and other applicable security screenings.
  • Experience with 3D reconstruction pipelines, photogrammetry, LiDAR processing, or neural scene representation methods like NeRF and 3D Gaussian splatting.
  • Proficiency with 3D content creation and processing tools such as Blender, Fusion, Maya, Houdini, MeshLab, or Open3D.
  • Experience with 3D interchange formats including USD/OpenUSD, OBJ, STL, and their integration with simulation engines.
  • Background in physically based rendering (PBR), material authoring, or real-time graphics pipeline development.
  • Experience building synthetic data generation pipelines for training computer vision or perception models.
