TL;DR · Member of Technical Staff Robotics Simulation

Member of Technical Staff, Microsoft Robotics (Robotics Simulation) joins the Microsoft Robotics team to lead the design, integration, and analysis of physics-based simulation frameworks. This role focuses on building high-fidelity environments that model robot kinematics, dynamics, sensors, and contact physics to support reinforcement learning, synthetic data generation, and sim-to-real transfer. The engineer will develop tools for rigid-body dynamics, actuator modeling, and asset toolchains supporting formats like USD, URDF, and MJCF. Key responsibilities include building infrastructure for autonomy testing and large-scale training pipelines while evaluating engines such as MuJoCo, Isaac Sim, and Gazebo. Required skills include proficiency in C++, Python, or other programming languages, along with expertise in physics simulation, 3D rendering, and ML frameworks like PyTorch or JAX to solve the challenge of moving robotics from experimentation to reliable, scaled deployment.

What you'll do

  • Design and maintain physics-based simulation frameworks for robot dynamics, contact modeling, and environmental interactions.
  • Implement realistic sensor models, actuator behaviors, and communication protocols that mirror real-world hardware.
  • Develop sim-to-real workflows using domain randomization and system identification to minimize the gap between simulation and reality.
  • Create asset toolchains to integrate industry-standard formats like USD, URDF, and MJCF into 3D content pipelines.
  • Build infrastructure for large-scale reinforcement learning training with parallelized environments and distributed ML integration.
  • Develop automated testing and evaluation frameworks to validate robotics algorithms and autonomous behaviors.
  • Lead architectural decisions for selecting and customizing simulation engines based on performance and scalability requirements.
  • Integrate telemetry and logging systems to monitor simulation fidelity, performance metrics, and training pipeline health.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field is required, or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python is required.
  • Candidates must be able to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check and other applicable security screenings.
  • Extensive experience in physics simulation engineering including rigid-body dynamics, contact modeling, or real-time physics engines is preferred.
  • Experience with robotics simulation platforms like Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, Gazebo, or Drake is preferred.
  • A background in 3D graphics, real-time rendering, or game engine development (Unity, Unreal) is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Python and C++ for distributed computing and GPU-accelerated simulation is preferred.
  • Experience with ML frameworks like PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow integrated with simulation environments is preferred.
