Member of Technical Staff, Microsoft Robotics (Robot Security & Safety) joins the Microsoft Robotics team to define and implement security and safety frameworks for an integrated robotics software and AI platform. This role bridges cybersecurity, functional safety, and AI safety for physical systems where software vulnerabilities can cause physical harm. The engineer will design end-to-end architectures across the hardware-software stack, develop threat models like FMEA and STPA, and enforce runtime safety envelopes for autonomous behaviors. Key responsibilities include managing cloud-to-edge security, developing incident response processes, and ensuring compliance with standards such as IEC 61508 and ISO 13482. The role requires proficiency in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python. Candidates will address the challenge of bounding autonomous AI behaviors within robust safety envelopes to ensure reliable deployment of robots in human-populated environments.
Design and implement end-to-end security and safety architectures for the full hardware-software robot stack.
Develop and maintain safety analyses and threat models like FMEA, FTA, and HAZOP for robotic systems.
Define and enforce runtime safety envelopes and monitors for autonomous behaviors such as collision avoidance.
Create incident response processes for physical safety events, AI behavior anomalies, and fleet compromises.
Embed security and safety requirements into the software development lifecycle and CI/CD pipelines.
Develop security policies aligned with industry standards like NIST, IEC 61508, and ISO 13482.
Use automation and AI to improve security operations, including automated vulnerability scanning and anomaly detection.
What we're looking for
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field and 4+ years of engineering experience with coding in languages like C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field and 6+ years of engineering experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 8+ years of experience.
Ability to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
Experience with functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, ISO 13482, or ISO 10218 and methodologies like FMEA, FTA, STPA, or HAZOP.
Experience in AI safety, including runtime monitoring of autonomous behaviors, safety envelope enforcement, or red-teaming of physical systems.
Familiarity with robotics system architectures, ROS/ROS2 security models, and cloud-to-edge communication for robot fleets.
Background in IoT, embedded systems, or operational technology (OT) security for connected physical devices.
Industry certifications in cybersecurity (CISSP, GICSP, CEH) or functional safety (TUV, CFSE) are preferred.
