Manager of Research and Instructional Computing

What you'll do

• Lead a cross-campus team of system administrators supporting instructional systems and research computing.
• Manage the roadmap, capacity planning, and operations for high-performance computing platforms like the Unicorn cluster.
• Set technical standards and priorities to align infrastructure investments with faculty and student needs.
• Oversee AI/ML infrastructure and support specialized workflows for scientific computing research.
• Manage the lifecycle and fleet management of large cluster, desktop, and VDI environments.
• Establish IT governance policies, service level agreements (SLAs), and technical standards.
• Translate complex technical requirements into accessible solutions for faculty and graduate researchers.
• Manage budgets, vendor relationships, and procurement processes for research infrastructure.

What we're looking for

• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 5 to 7 years of experience installing, configuring, and maintaining workstations and servers in a multi-vendor environment.
• Experience with High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters utilizing advanced GPUs and CPU computing.
• Experience with Artificial Intelligence infrastructure and related workflows.
• Proficiency in computer networks, network services, and distributed computing including TCP/IP and Ethernet.
• 15+ years of experience managing or leading technical teams in higher education, research, or HPC environments.
• Expertise in Linux system administration at scale and capacity planning for large cluster/desktop/VDI environments.
• Strong skills in project management, budgeting, vendor management, and translating technical needs into researcher-facing solutions.
