Lead Systems Engineering (Acoustics SME) serves as a critical role within the Seabed Systems Business Unit, focusing on underwater acoustics sensor infrastructure and communications. Day-to-day responsibilities include developing computer models of sonar performance based on ocean sound propagation, creating system specifications, and conducting design tests to validate system designs. Key technical skills required include proficiency in physics-based solvers like BELLHOP, RAM/PE, or KRAKEN; MATLAB processing; and scripting in Bash or C. The role involves solving complex problems related to underwater telemetry, signal detection algorithms, and sensor transduction. Candidates must be skilled in DOORS and MBSE tools while managing the technical lifecycle of subsea programs involving seabed sensor networks and mobile platform sonar suites.
Develop and maintain computer models of sonar system performance based on ocean sound propagation and signal detection algorithms.
Define requirements, flow-down, and traceability for complex electronic systems using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) processes.
Validate modeling outputs against legacy tools and physics-based benchmarks to ensure accuracy and fidelity.
Create engineering artifacts including system specifications, interface definitions, trade studies, and detailed designs.
Conduct analysis and design tests to validate system designs and provide data recording and reporting for test efforts.
Manage project risks and develop mitigation plans in coordination with program and functional leadership.
Participate in sea trials, system installations, and technical exchanges with customers and subcontractors.
Brief status updates and technical results to internal programs and external customers.
What we're looking for
Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOD security clearance.
At least 5 years of experience in systems engineering and the government program acquisition lifecycle.
At least 4 years of experience developing end-to-end acoustic analysis workflows using MATLAB, scripting/programming (Bash, C), and environmental databases.
At least 3 years of experience with DOORS and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
At least 3 years of experience evaluating acoustic system design and performance including sensor transduction, signal processing, and phased array design.
At least 2 years of experience with underwater acoustic propagation modeling using physics-based solvers like BELLHOP, RAM/PE, or equivalent tools.
At least 2 years of experience applying acoustic modeling to operational underwater systems such as seabed networks or mobile platform sonar suites.
At least 1 year of leadership experience guiding modeling standards and mentoring junior engineers.
Experience with active DoD SECRET clearance (preferred).
Experience with Cameo suite, MS Visio, Earned Value Management, or RF communication theory (preferred).
