Research & Development Intern

What you'll do

• Support the development of new technologies and existing 3M products and operations.
• Lead and direct assigned projects toward advanced technical solutions.
• Document detailed experimental records in electronic laboratory notebooks for invention and patent submissions.
• Analyze, interpret, and communicate experimental results to relevant stakeholders.
• Collaborate with researchers, analytical chemists, and process engineers to advance projects.
• Develop digital science tools, including algorithms and models, to address research challenges.
• Perform materials characterization, formulation science, or process design as required by the project.

What we're looking for

• Must be currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in science or engineering from an accredited institution.
• Must be a U.S. person as defined by U.S. Export Control laws.
• Must have completed a minimum of Freshman Year (2 semesters) by the start of the internship.
• Must possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle ambiguity in early-stage scouting.
• Must have excellent communication skills, including oral, written, and presentation abilities.
• Must be self-motivated, self-directed, and possess leadership and networking skills.
• Experience in machine learning, data science, or software engineering (preferred).
• 6-12 months of practical laboratory experience in polymer synthesis or materials characterization (preferred).
• Fluency in one or more programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, C, C++, or R (preferred).
• Experience with Microsoft Azure ML and/or AWS ML (preferred).
• Experience with additive manufacturing, robotics, or mechanical design (preferred).
• Previous relevant intern experience or co-op with a company or university (preferred).
