PhD Research & Development Intern

What you'll do

• Support the development of new technologies and existing 3M products and operations.
• Lead and direct assigned projects toward advanced technical solutions.
• Document detailed experimental records in electronic laboratory notebooks for invention and patent submissions.
• Analyze, interpret, and communicate experimental results to the team.
• Collaborate with senior researchers on product engineering or technology development projects.
• Work with analytical chemists and process engineers to advance R&D projects.
• Develop digital science tools, including ML models and simulations, to address research challenges.
• Perform materials characterization, formulation science, or process design as required.

What we're looking for

• Must be currently pursuing a PhD degree in science or engineering from an accredited institution.
• Must be a U.S. person as defined by U.S. Export Control laws.
• Must have completed a minimum of two semesters of undergraduate study by the start of the internship.
• 6-12 months of practical laboratory experience in synthesis, processing, or materials characterization (preferred).
• Experience in machine learning, data science, software engineering, or applied mathematics (preferred).
• Fluency in at least one programming language such as Python, MATLAB, C, C++, or R (preferred).
• Experience with Microsoft Azure ML, AWS ML, or complex Big Data workflows (preferred).
