TL;DR · Hardware Security Technical Leader

The Hardware Security Technical Leader joins the Hardware & Firmware Security Team within the Security & Trust Organization. This role focuses on hyperscaler security, ensuring next-generation platforms and custom hardware architectures meet rigorous trust and resilience standards. You will own the analysis of systems from high-level architecture down to component-level silicon, providing actionable security requirements and architectural guidance to product teams, firmware engineers, and third-party vendors. Key responsibilities include evaluating schematics and datasheets to identify threat vectors, authoring engineering specifications, and representing technical interests in groups like the Open Compute Project and SONiC. You will utilize expertise in hardware root-of-trust, secure boot, and cryptographic acceleration while applying standards such as NIST SP 800-193, NSA CNSA 2.0, and the EU Cyber Resilience Act to solve complex hardware security problems.

What you'll do

  • Provide actionable security requirements and architectural design guidance to product teams and third-party vendors.
  • Evaluate hardware designs, schematics, and component datasheets to identify threat vectors and compliance gaps.
  • Interpret and establish requirements aligned with industry standards like NIST SP 800-193 and NSA CNSA 2.0.
  • Author hardware security requirements, threat models, compliance white papers, and engineering specifications.
  • Lead concurrent security evaluations and design reviews across diverse hardware programs with high autonomy.
  • Provide technical mentorship to members of the Security and Trust engineering team.
  • Represent Cisco's technical interests in external open-source and standards groups like OCP and SONiC.

What we're looking for

  • Degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or a related field.
  • 9+ years of experience for BS holders, 6+ years for MS holders, or 3+ years for PhD holders.
  • Prior experience leading security initiatives and mentoring engineers as a technical leader.
  • Prior background in hardware development, including interpreting system-level schematics, block diagrams, and component datasheets.
  • Prior background in hardware root-of-trust, secure boot, hardware/firmware resiliency, tamper resistance, or cryptographic acceleration.
  • Experience with designing, implementing, or evaluating hardware-rooted attestation architectures and device identity mechanisms (preferred).
  • Experience with Hyperscaler and cloud platform architectures such as OCP specifications, OpenBMC, Caliptra, OpenTitan, or OpenPRoT (preferred).
  • Experience with hardware threat modeling, side-channel analysis, or contributing to industry standards like OCP and Caliptra (preferred).
