TL;DR · Hardware Development Engineer, Gateway Failure Analysis

Hardware Development Engineer, Gateway Failure Analysis (Starlink) joins the Starlink team to design, build, and test electronics for a global network of ground stations that facilitate data transfer between satellites and end-users. The role involves performing detailed failure analysis on ground antenna hardware, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions while developing novel environmental, RF, mechanical, and electrical test solutions. Day-to-day tasks include selecting commercial-off-the-shelf components, designing custom PCBAs, conducting electrical bench testing to replicate anomalies, and building tools to analyze field data. Candidates should possess skills in circuit analysis, PCBAs, and various measurement techniques using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers. Required technical competencies include knowledge of RF principles, environmental testing like HALT/HASS, and programming in Python or C/C++. The role addresses the challenge of ensuring ground antenna hardware survives harsh environments while maintaining reliable communication.

What you'll do

  • Design and execute novel environmental, RF, mechanical, and electrical test solutions for ground antenna electronics.
  • Perform detailed failure analysis on hardware to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Select commercial-off-the-shelf components and design custom PCBAs to measure signals and power units under test.
  • Provide hands-on support for hardware through design qualification, production ramp, and network rollout.
  • Conduct electrical bench testing of failures to replicate and mitigate technical anomalies.
  • Build physical and digital tools to analyze data collected from the field and laboratory environments.
  • Drive continuous improvements to designs by solving complex engineering problems with simple solutions.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or another STEM discipline.
  • 1+ years of experience in hardware development, failure analysis, or reliability engineering (internships and co-ops acceptable).
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee to meet ITAR requirements.
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or another STEM discipline (preferred).
  • Experience with electronics and mechanical design/analysis including knowledge of RF principles (preferred).
  • Experience analyzing circuits and PCBAs while developing functional test plans (preferred).
  • Experience with test equipment like oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and network analyzers to validate product requirements (preferred).
  • Experience in environmental testing such as HALT/HASS, thermal, humidity, shock, and vibration (preferred).
