TL;DR · Director, AI Research - Strategic Partnerships

Director, AI Research - Strategic Partnerships leads research collaborations with frontier AI labs and strategic model-development partners to advance hardware and software roadmaps. This leader builds and mentors a team of researchers and engineers while serving as a scientific peer to external partners on topics like reinforcement learning, large-scale model training, and GPU programming. The role involves defining the technical agenda for joint research programs, including RL training pipelines, kernel and PPA optimization, and confidential compute architectures. The candidate must translate frontier-model requirements into actionable inputs for silicon, architecture, and compiler teams while tracking measurable goals like model uplift and workload performance. Required expertise includes deep knowledge of AI systems, hardware-software stacks, and experience in research prototyping or production shipping to solve challenges at the intersection of advanced training techniques and high-performance computing infrastructure.

What you'll do

  • Define and own the AI research strategy for strategic lab partnerships aligned with AMD hardware and software priorities.
  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-caliber team of AI researchers and engineers while setting technical standards.
  • Serve as a credible scientific peer to partner labs on reinforcement learning, model training, and large-scale systems.
  • Drive joint research programs involving RL training pipelines, GPU programming, kernel optimization, and frontier model performance.
  • Translate frontier-model requirements into prioritized input for AMD’s hardware roadmap and software stack.
  • Establish IP-preserving collaboration architectures to protect intellectual property during co-development with partners.
  • Set and track measurable goals for partnerships including model uplift, workload performance, and research milestones.
  • Communicate research results, trade-offs, and roadmap implications to both technical and executive audiences.

What we're looking for

  • PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, or a related field, or equivalent research experience and demonstrated impact.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in AI/ML research with a track record of published work or research shipped into production.
  • Deep expertise in reinforcement learning, large-scale model training, GPU programming, and AI systems performance optimization.
  • Experience leading research teams and setting technical direction across multiple concurrent programs.
  • Experience working within frontier AI labs or leading external research partnerships as a scientific peer.
  • Strong understanding of the hardware-software stack for large-model training and inference.
  • Ability to remain hands-on with training pipelines, kernels, or research prototyping while leading a team.
  • Excellent communication skills to influence executives, partners, and engineers across organizational boundaries.
