JOB TITLE: Database Engineer
The Database Engineer joins the Database Engineering team to manage the health, performance, security, and availability of database platforms across multiple Microsoft Azure regions. This hands-on role involves operating a multi-region SQL Server fleet using Always On availability groups and administering Snowflake accounts, including warehouses, role-based access, and cost monitoring. Key responsibilities include participating in a U.S. time zone on-call rotation, performing root cause analysis, and executing production changes like version upgrades and failovers. You will utilize SQL Server, Snowflake, Azure virtual machines, Terraform, PowerShell, and Python to automate operations. The role requires deep expertise in performance tuning using wait statistics and execution plans to solve complex database problems while maintaining high availability, disaster recovery, and security controls like transparent data encryption and private endpoints.
Participate in the U.S. time zone on-call rotation to respond to incidents and lead root cause analysis.
Operate a multi-region SQL Server fleet on Azure including capacity planning and workload balancing.
Administer Snowflake accounts, warehouses, role-based access, secure data sharing, and cost monitoring.
Plan and execute production changes including major version upgrades, failovers, and after-hours maintenance.
Investigate performance problems using wait statistics, execution plans, and Query Store to partner on query design.
Maintain high availability, disaster recovery, and security controls like encryption, key rotation, and private endpoints.
Automate provisioning and operations using Terraform, PowerShell, and Python through CI/CD pipelines.
Build database monitoring with Grafana and OpenTelemetry while developing internal AI tooling for database operations.
What we're looking for
5+ years of hands-on production experience with SQL Server as a DBA or database engineer.
Deep knowledge of Always On availability groups and Windows Server Failover Clustering.
Strong knowledge of backup, restore, and recovery models with experience designing and testing disaster recovery.
Proven performance tuning skills using wait statistics, execution plans, Query Store, indexing, and blocking analysis.
Experience running SQL Server on Azure, including virtual machines, storage, virtual networks, private endpoints, Azure Key Vault, and Microsoft Entra ID.
Ability to work independently during incidents, participate in U.S. on-call rotations, and perform after-hours maintenance.
Hands-on Snowflake administration, including warehouses, role-based access control, secure data sharing, and cost monitoring (preferred).
Hands-on experience with Terraform and scripting in PowerShell or Python (preferred).
