The Controls Engineer, Data Center Engineering joins the Data Center Engineering team to design, implement, and optimize integrated automation and control systems for global data center infrastructure. This role bridges electrical power control and mechanical building automation, requiring the design of systems for electrical infrastructure like EPMS and MV Power Distribution Control Systems, alongside mechanical systems including chilled water plants and cooling towers. Key responsibilities include authoring control system specifications, programming PLCs, PACs, and DDC controllers, and supporting the Data Center Information System platform. The candidate will utilize technologies such as MQTT, Inductive Automation's Ignition, and IEC 61131-3 programming languages including Structured Text and Ladder Diagram. Essential skills involve troubleshooting, commissioning, and integrating data across electrical and mechanical domains to ensure facility reliability and cohesive operator experiences.
Design automation and control systems for electrical infrastructure and mechanical systems like chilled water plants and cooling towers.
Author and iterate on control system specifications and sequences of operations based on construction lessons and vendor feedback.
Configure and program PLCs, PACs, and DDC controllers or provide technical oversight for third-party providers.
Integrate electrical and mechanical system data into the Ignition-based HMI environment over MQTT.
Oversee the commissioning of control systems to ensure they perform to design intent before operational handoff.
Troubleshoot controls and monitoring issues using fault detection and diagnostics to protect facility reliability.
Serve as the technical liaison between design teams, consultants, vendors, and contractors to drive high-quality deliverables.
Provide training and mentorship to operations personnel on control systems and the DCIS environment.
What we're looking for
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, or Controls Engineering, or equivalent job-related experience.
5+ years of engineering experience with control systems in data centers or mission-critical environments for both electrical power and mechanical/HVAC systems.
Experience programming DDC/PLC controllers and redlining controls drawings.
Understanding of controls for high-availability electrical systems (such as EPMS and MV PDCS) and mechanical systems (such as chilled water plants and BAS infrastructure).
8+ years of experience with data center control systems across design, construction, and commissioning phases (preferred).
Proficiency in IEC 61131-3 programming languages such as Structured Text, Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, and Instruction List (preferred).
Proven experience authoring and maintaining technical control system specifications and Sequences of Operations from scratch (preferred).
Practical knowledge of platforms including Schneider Electric Modicon M580, Siemens Desigo/Simatic S7, Johnson Controls Metasys, Tridium Niagara, SEL RTAC, and Woodward easYgen or DEIF AGC (preferred).
