The Controls Engineer, Data Center Engineering joins the Data Center Engineering team to design, implement, and optimize integrated automation and control systems for global data center infrastructure. This role bridges electrical power control and mechanical building automation, requiring the candidate to manage the full project lifecycle from specification authorship and construction administration to commissioning and operational improvement. Key responsibilities include programming PLCs, PACs, and DDC controllers, and integrating electrical and mechanical data into the Ignition-based DCIS platform using MQTT. The candidate must possess expertise in systems like Schneider Electric Modicon, Siemens Simatic, and Tridium Niagara, while utilizing protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and IEC 61850. The work focuses on maintaining high-availability infrastructure, including EPMS, MV Power Distribution, chilled water plants, and cooling towers.
Design automation and control systems for electrical infrastructure and mechanical systems like chilled water plants and cooling towers.
Author and iterate on control system specifications and sequences of operations based on construction feedback and RFI trends.
Configure and program PLCs, PACs, and DDC controllers or provide technical oversight for third-party providers.
Integrate electrical and mechanical system data into the Ignition-based HMI environment over MQTT.
Oversee the commissioning of control systems to ensure they perform to design intent before operational handoff.
Troubleshoot controls and monitoring issues using fault detection and diagnostics to protect facility reliability.
Serve as a technical liaison between design teams, consultants, vendors, and contractors to drive high-quality deliverables.
Provide training to operations personnel on control systems and support emergency response during facility incidents.
What we're looking for
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent job-related experience.
5+ years of engineering experience with control systems in data centers or mission-critical environments for both electrical power and mechanical/HVAC systems.
Understanding of controls for high-availability electrical systems (such as EPMS and MV PDCS) and mechanical systems (such as chilled water plants and BAS infrastructure).
Experience programming DDC/PLC controllers and redlining controls drawings.
8+ years of experience with data center control systems, with demonstrated involvement across design, construction, and commissioning phases for both electrical and mechanical control scope (preferred).
Proficiency in IEC 61131-3 programming languages such as Structured Text (ST), Ladder Diagram (LD), Function Block Diagram (FBD), and Instruction List (IL) (preferred).
Proven experience authoring and maintaining technical control system specifications, including the ability to develop specifications and Sequences of Operations (SOO) from scratch (preferred).
Practical knowledge of electrical and mechanical control platforms, including Schneider Electric Modicon M580, Siemens Desigo / Simatic S7, Johnson Controls Metasys, Tridium Niagara, SEL RTAC, and Woodward easYgen or DEIF AGC (preferred).
