Product Owner, Discovery AI
Open Role Brief
Quick scan for responsibilities, requirements, and tone before you dive deeper.
Job title: Product Owner, Discovery AI
- Location: Cambridge, MA
About the Job
As Product Owner, Discovery AI within our Digital team, you will support the development and delivery of AI/ML-powered digital products that help Sanofi scientists identify and prioritize novel therapeutic targets. We work at the intersection of biology, data science, and software — and we are growing.
Working under the guidance of senior product leaders, you will leverage your scientific background to bridge the gap between research teams and technology solutions, ensuring that digital tools meet real scientific needs and integrate effectively into research workflows. You will be the connective tissue between our scientific users and the engineering teams that build for them. Your scientific background is your superpower: researchers will trust you, you will understand their language, and you will translate their needs into work the development team can execute on. With a continuous drive for improvement, you will always seek new opportunities to make your product more valuable — the status quo is not enough.
This role is deliberately structured as a learning environment. You will be mentored by experienced Product Owners and will grow your product management skills through hands-on delivery, taking on increasing ownership as your confidence and capability build.
Join the digital engine driving Sanofi’s transformation - where AI, automation, and bold experimentation power faster science and smarter decisions. Here, you’ll help build the first biopharma company powered by AI at scale.
About Sanofi
We’re an R&D-driven, AI-powered biopharma company committed to improving people’s lives and delivering compelling growth. Our deep understanding of the immune system – and innovative pipeline – enables us to invent medicines and vaccines that treat and protect millions of people around the world. Together, we chase the miracles of science to improve people’s lives.
Main Responsibilities
Be the Voice of the Scientist
- The most important thing you will do is make sure we are building the right things. You will spend time with computational biologists, wet-lab researchers, and R&D leaders understanding how they work, where they are stuck, and what a better tool would look like for them.
- Conduct discovery sessions and requirements interviews with scientific stakeholders to surface real unmet needs
- Translate user needs into structured user stories and acceptance criteria that engineering teams can build against
- Validate delivered features with scientific users to confirm they solve the original problem and feed findings back into the backlog
Support Agile Product Delivery
- You will be a working member of a cross-functional Agile squad. You do not need to know Agile deeply on day one — you will learn by doing.
- Participate in sprint planning, backlog grooming, sprint reviews, and retrospectives alongside other Product Owners on the team
- Contribute to backlog prioritization by applying structured frameworks that weigh scientific impact, user need, and technical feasibility
- Track what gets built against what was promised and flag misalignments early
- Write and maintain product documentation: user guides, release notes, and data dictionaries
Learn to Build a Product Case
- Product decisions at Sanofi are grounded in evidence. You will learn how to structure the argument for what to build and why — and how to measure whether it worked.
- Support the development of lean product proposals articulating the business problem, target users, and riskiest assumptions
- Contribute to business case documentation as products move through Sanofi's stage-gate process (Explore to Build to Scale)
- Help track KPIs and user adoption metrics post-launch to demonstrate product value to leadership
Drive Adoption
- A product that does not get used has no value. Driving adoption is a core part of this role — and it is where your scientific credibility matters most.
- Design and deliver onboarding and training programs that help research teams integrate new AI/ML tools into their workflows
- Create materials — walkthrough guides, use case examples, FAQs — that make it easy for scientists to understand and use new capabilities
- Monitor adoption metrics and synthesize user feedback into concrete product improvement recommendations
Connect Teams and Keep Alignment
- Build working relationships across computational biology, wet-lab research, data science, and engineering
- Facilitate communication between scientific users and the development team, ensuring shared understanding of goals and priorities
- Represent scientific user needs clearly in cross-functional forums and product planning sessions within Discovery AI, Digital In Silico Research and wider Digital R&D
About You
Experience & Education
- Bachelor's in life sciences, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field (Master's plus)
- 3-5 years experience in laboratory research or related domain in the life sciences or helathcare space.
- 2-4 years of Product Ownership, project management or program coordination experience in pharma, biotech, or academic R&D
- Strong written and verbal communication skills — including the ability to write clearly for both scientific and non-scientific audiences
- Comfort engaging with diverse stakeholders across functions
- Eagerness to develop new skills and take on increasing responsibility
- Openness to feedback and commitment to continuous improvement
- Adaptability in a fast-paced, evolving environment
- Proactive approach to problem-solving and professional development
Nice to have qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with biological data types: genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, or multi-omics
- Working knowledge of target discovery, disease biology, or drug/vaccine development processes
- Experience with concepts of digital product development and management
- Exposure to Agile or Scrum methodologies, even informally
- Experience with change management best practices and demonstrated experience
- Experience building, adopting, or championing analytical platforms or bioinformatics tools in a team setting
- Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and their application in drug discovery
What Success Looks Like
In this role, you will be successful if you:
- Effectively support product delivery while developing your product ownership capabilities
- Build trusted relationships with scientific stakeholders through your domain expertise
- Help drive adoption of digital tools by connecting technology value to scientific needs
- Demonstrate growing ability to translate requirements and manage product activities independently
- Show readiness for increased responsibility and progression toward senior product roles
Why Choose Us:

- Discover endless opportunities to grow your talent and drive your
career, whether it’s through a promotion or lateral move, at home or

- Take good care of yourself and your family, with a wide range of health and wellbeing benefits including high-quality healthcare, prevention and wellness programs and at least 14 weeks’ gender-neutral parental leave.
- Join the digital force behind Sanofi’s AI-powered pipeline, where Expert, Generative, and Snackable AI accelerate the discovery, development and delivery of breakthrough treatments to patients.
- Help reduce time from discovery to commercialization, delivering life-changing medicines to patients faster than ever.
- Join a workplace where diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the core, with Employee
Resource Groups and leadership programs that celebrate every voice.
